I am a book worm, and yet that has played to my advantage because of all the great information, advice, tips, and science that I have gathered because of my reading obsession.

The following are books I have read, enjoyed, and gleaned much from. I highlight what each book talks about in the areas of nutrition, dieting, weight loss, fitness, weight training, intuitive eating, eating binges, and exercise. Feel free to find what YOU’ve been looking for!

Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink

Wansink takes a look at why we overeat when mindlessly chowing down on food, and shares the information in a fun, light manner. There are some incredible discoveries, studies, and observations that will blow your mind! Highly recommend it! This book helped me stop eating over the sink, hiding food, or finishing my plate, just ‘because.’

Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy by Walter Willett

Willett, of Harvard’s nutrition center, proves what the best diet would be like based on explicit scientific evidence and studies, and why the current USDA pyramid is flawed, incomplete, and quite unhealthy.

What to Eat by Marion Nestle

Nestle, a leading authority on food, goes through almost every food question out there, chapter by chapter. Very enlightening, charming, and eye opening!

Volumetrics by Barbara Rolls and Volumetrics Eating Plan by Barbara Rolls

In her books, Rolls explores the idea of eating pleasure by eating foods high in water content, and low in energy density. Fascinating research and pictures to prove her point! I have tried some of the recipes and love making them. I feel fuller with less calories when I follow the eating style she recommends.

Food Rules by Michael Pollan and In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan

Both books by Pollan are intriguing, to the point, and offer sage advice. It is fascinating to discover what tricks go behind food placement, where food actually comes from, and how to best handle food situations in a healthy manner. I especially love his rules because they are simple, sensible, and can be a part of any healthy diet.

Food Matters by Mark Bittman

Bittman writes about the impact we could each have if we ate a little saner, or greener. He touts research, numbers, and health benefits to illustrate the point that our food choices actually govern prices, animal cruelty, and ultimately our future. His book is both captivating and funny.

The End of Overeating by David Kessler

Kessler uses scientific studies, numbers, and other evidence to prove the fact that we can stop overeating if we are conscious that we are overeating in the first place. He is adamant of the fact that we can overcome obesity by understanding why we got there in the first place, taking action, and getting our bodies and minds back. It is fascinating stuff! His book helped me really practice and live intuitive eating.

Body Fat Solution: Five Principles for Burning Fat, Building Lean Muscles, Ending Emotional Eating, and Maintaining Your Perfect Weight  Tom Venuto

This book is hands down my all-time favorite because he combines the emotional and physical aspects of eating and exercise to prove his point that it is all interconnected. And he gives great advice to not only get rid of exercise or eating excuses, but to really be able to get over any type of emotional eating. He helped me by not only motivating me to change some of my habits, but to really look at how I was using foods to fuel my body.  Another bonus: he touts that weight lifting is one of the best things you can do for your body, which principle I totally agree with!

The Lean Body Promise: Burn Away Fat and Release the Leaner, Stronger Body Inside You by Lee Labrada

Labrada is an expert on exercise and bodybuilding and he shares his secrets with us! I enjoyed reading this book because he gives great advice on foods to eat for a leaner you, exercises and workouts to do to get the body you want, and tips to be able to maintain it all. A great read for any fitness lovers (or fit wannabes)!

Foods that Harm Foods that Heal by Editors of Reader’s Digest

A fascinating read! It helps in understanding, A to Z, how various foods can harm or heal us. The book takes a holistic approach, has plenty of pictures of foods, and lists almost any fruit, cheese, vegetable, and/or grain you can think of, along with benefits of eating each food, how they could be harmful (if at all), and why certain foods should be included in the diet more than others.

Eat Your Way To Happiness by Elizabeth Somer

Somer, an R.D., shares secrets of how to use the ‘secrets’ of thin people to curb cravings, lose weight, and enjoy food. It was well-written, very motivating, and had great recipes.

The Culprit and The Cure by Steven Aldana

Aldana writes about how lifestyle is our problem, but also how lifestyle is the cure for getting out of the fat and obesity mess we’re in. He uses lots of scientific evidences to prove various points, focuses on the small steps we can take, and gives ideas of how to change your lifestyle now. Very motivating and a great read. He dumbs down all the scientific jargon so anyone can understand what he is talking about!

French Women Don’t Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano

Written by a French woman, Guiliano, who overate in America as a study-abroad student and found her ‘French’ ways again thanks to a wise doctor, shares the secrets of how French women enjoy and revel in their food and creations and stay quite thin. She gives great advice, anecdotal stories, and examples of how these ‘tips’ can be lived anywhere. A very informative and great read, and I would recommend it especially for someone struggling with emotional eating.

Zumba: Ditch The Workout, Join The Party! The Zumba Weight Loss Program by Beto Perez and Maggie Greenwood-Robinson

This is the official Zumba book and guide to losing weight, by shaking it up! The book offers a great plan, workouts, and fun dance routines. The book even comes with 60 minute DVD to get that body moving, in your own living room! Dancing really does deliver results without forcing anyone to a gym! I enjoyed the book and loved getting great meal ideas, fun workouts, and booty-shaking results.
