My Eating Habits Lately

Hiii everyone!

How’s it hangin’?

So yesterday this happened…

my eating lately

She is sitting up unassisted!

It was like for 5 seconds, but still. 😉

She’s been ‘sitting’ for awhile now, but she couldn’t keep her back straight, so it was more of a hamstring stretch than a sitting position–so this is pretty fun to see a bit of an improvement right before my eyes.

Anyways. I just love her.

Yesterday though it miiiiiight have been a bit harder to think she was adorable because girlfriend would NOT nap longer than 20 minutes for 2 of her naps. I thought I was going to pull my hair out (and not because I had more important things to do or anything, but because then she was SO tired and cranky for most of the day). Gah.

You win some you lose some in the napping department sometime. Oh well!

Let’s chat food, mmmkay?!

I must say this though–just because we’re going to chat about food doesn’t mean there are going to be high quality food photos…I am wayyy too lazy and impatient (feeeeeeed me!!) to take good food photos. Not a food photographer here. At least I own it.  😉

My Eating Habits Lately

When I was pregnant with little miss Lily, my eating habits were WHACKED. There were several weeks where all I wanted was sour patch kids and lemonade. A few weeks where all I wanted was Slurpees and sweet potato fries. A few weeks where all I wanted was huge salads with sour cream & onion chips on the side. And a few weeks where food sounded absolutely terrible.

As you can see-totally crazy.

And a lot of my pregnancy I didn’t want chocolate or ice cream–two of my all-time favorite foods! So.weird. But during my pregnancy, I ate what I wanted when I wanted. I had done that before then too, no problem, but I think some fun foods were still sort of ‘off limits’ in my subconsciousness because of whatever reason (chips being one of them), so pregnancy brought it allllll out on the table.

Yah, this isn’t really a post about pregnancy, but rather a post about how my eating habits are lately, now that that baby is out of me (and has been for some time….) yes, this post has been a long time coming.

You see, my eating habits are still a bit all over the place. And here is the best part: I AM TOTALLY COOL WITH THAT.

my eating habits lately

I was listening to a Jillian Michaels podcast a few weeks back (I like her podcasts for some good info on life coaching and fitness/health-related stuff), and she made a point to a caller that just resonated with me. She said something along the lines of: if you want a really incredible looking butt (or whatever area of your body) you have to make sacrifices for that, such as not eating chocolate, any type of ‘fun’ stuff, etc. And she also said, if you are cool with a pretty good butt, you can be less stringent with your food, and include more ‘fun’ foods in your diet.

It clicked with me because…..I am SO totally happy with a pretty good butt (or whatever body part–you get my drift). Meaning, I am cool with it if I look strong, healthy, and fit, and I feel awesome, but I get my treats too. I personally do NOT want to look like a bodybuilder because I don’t want to sacrifice my fun foods. And I just don’t want that life or that body or the sacrifices that come with it. I don’t.

Plain and simple!

And these thoughts were all swirling around in my head about the same time someone commented on my IG picture (of salmon, brown rice, and salad) and had said something along the lines of: “I am shocked because you’re the fitness professional in my feed who usually posts about treats.”

At first I was kind of stung (I know, silly me). Then I was sad for everyone who in her feed only posts about salmon and salad (don’t get me wrong, I LOVE those foods, but I eat more than just the ‘good for me foods’). And then I was kind of proud of the fact that I am known as the fitness professional to her who actually eats fun foods-and all kinds of foods, for that matter!

Yep, that is me.

I know that fabulous (i.e. good-for-me) food is great fuel for workouts, keeps me strong and healthy, and makes me feel great–which is why my diet is mainly lean protein, veggies, fruit, whole grains, nuts, olive oil, and seeds–but I also LOVE and enjoy eating foods that are just simply fun to eat. I will not give up my love for all things sour cream & onion chips, candy when I want it (hand over the laffy taffy and junior mints please), ice cream, cookie butter, pizza, cheese, and chocolate, etc.

And for the record–I eat all those fun foods on the reg.

my eating habits lately

As for my eating habits lately–they are actually quite balanced.

Lots of fresh fruits & veggies (bell peppers as snacks, kale salads with clementines, apples on the go), lean protein (chicken tacos, turkey lasagna, whey protein shakes, eggs), nuts (trail mix, almond butter), olive oil (in all my cooking), whole grains (whole wheat bread, w.w. pasta), and seeds (sunflower), with my fun foods– chips, ice cream, cookie butter, banana bread, chocolate, etc. -sprinkled throughout.

my eating habits lately

I feel good, na na na na na. I knew that I would, na na na na na. I feel good! (name that song. I actually don’t know the name of it?)

Lastly, because I am a fitness instructor, and basically work out often, I could have faster results if I wanted to. I am definitely stronger in my core again (thank you, teaching CXWORX!), and I can feel that I am! I love holding hovers for longer now, and crunching higher, and being able to do all the harder options again as I teach. But I must say, my abs are not as defined nor as visible as they were right before I got pregnant…

And I am cool with it!

If I want to lose the jiggle faster, I know what to do….cut out those ‘fun’ foods… But for right now, I don’t want to kiss the queso, the chips, or the ice cream good-bye, so some of that jiggle is just going to stay for a bit longer. 😉

in a nut shell:

Shorter process of getting that amazing butt: lose the treats.

Longer process of getting a pretty good butt: eating treats here and there

I’ll take the second one! 😉

{I didn’t talk much about the fitness part of getting that ‘butt’ but I am pretty sure you all know that work has to take place on the fitness front too.}

Linking up with Jenn today for WIAW.

I am off to coach my GRIT class! woot. :)

Have a GREAT day! <3

What do YOUR eating habits look like lately??! What are some of YOUR favorite good-for-you foods, and some of YOUR favorite ‘fun’ foods??! What are YOUR thoughts on all this??!

This is one of the reasons that I admire you/your blog..because you enjoy those “fun foods” and aren’t ashamed (and don’t apologize) for enjoying them! An RD once told me to “count nutrients, not calories”…and I LOVE this so much. As long as you are getting all the nutrients your body needs, there is absolutely no harm in enjoying fun foods, too!
    Happy Wednesday :)

  3. I’ve always loved your approach to food Annette! You eat sensibly, but you enjoy your treats too – and I think that’s important. I’m with you – I won’t give up my treats for an ‘awesome butt!’

I listened to that podcast too and I thought felt like Jillian was talking to me;-) It immediately made me feel better and not be so hard on myself. Like you, I get my workouts in and love having my ‘fun’ foods. I am OK with having a little extra weight, I am healthy and have balance.

  5. I feel like the “pretty good butt” version is healthier and more balanced. I know that I see women at the gym with “great butts” but they are the first to admit that they basically have to watch every.single.morsel. Of food! That’s not a way to live, and personally, I have kids and more important things in life than worry about the perfect physique. I eat well, feel good, have fun, and look pretty darn good! :-)

  6. I. LOVE. THIS. It is EXACTLY how I feel about food–I eat healthy “good-for-me” foods that do my body good and fuel my life/workouts, but I will NOT give up ice cream, chocolate, or peanut butter. Ever. It drives me BONKERS when people CONSTANTLY refer to their fun-foods as “cheats”–it’s such a NEGATIVE connotation. But I think that when people are seen as “fitness professionals” they feel that they have to uphold a higher standard lest their followers look at them as being less than human (does that make sense?) I’ve had people question my food (along the lines of, “That doesn’t sound very healthy”) which stings for a nano-second until I realize that I’m completely content with my food choices AND by better-than-average {insert body part}. One of the many reasons you’re so awesome is that YOU KEEP IT REAL. And your life is probably less stressful for it!

  7. Yessssssss! I’m right there with ya girlfriend. Just one of the many things we see eye to eye on! I love my fun foods way too much, and I’m not willing to sacrifice them. I know it’d result in a much less happy Ashley! Thanks for keeping it real! Love you!

Haven’t commented much, but long time reader. This post made me want to comment – because this is probably my favorite thing about you…you work your BUTT of working out…but you also eat normally and enjoy lots of treats and I think that’s what life is all about. Life is WAY too short to not eat treats, in my opinion!

  9. I LOVE her podcasts- they get me through all of my long runs and i totally agree with her thoughts on eating! I’m so ok with pretty good :) Life is too short!! Yayy for sitting up- whoop whoop

  10. I completely agree. What’s the point of looking like a fitness model if you are denying yourself some major pleasures? I love food too much for that. I like to indulge on Saturdays and Sundays and eat healthy the rest of the week. My big indulgences are carrot cake, cheesecake, wine, some (gasp) white table bread with dinner on the weekends. But hey, I’m in the gym six days a week laying a strong foundation.

  11. Surprisingly enough, my eating habits pretty healthy (lots of veggies, fruit, protein, etc.) now that I’m in my second trimester. And I don’t have a ton of cravings, like I thought I might. Although, I’m very influenced by someone else talking about a food (like the soft pretzel my friend mentioned last week and I couldn’t get off my mind until having one :) As cliche as it sounds, I say ‘all things in moderation’ because restricting all-too-often leads to binge land, which is no good.

  18. Love this post! As a dietitian, people who don’t know me will say things, like, “Wow—you eat pizza?” I mean, yeah, I know how to subsist on kale & steamed fish and lemon water, but I have no desire to do that. A life without wine and dark chocolate would be a very sad thing. As long as I feel good and everything works well, I’m a happy camper. Sane & happy > “Perfect”

I have always loved your posts and eating habits. YOU are more of an inspiration to me then all the health gurus that insist on strict regimes because first of all, you look amazing on the outside AND you are amazing on the inside. Second of all, you show that you can have a healthy balanced life and you don’t have to deprive yourself of anything. You are proof that you can love your life, have fun, have a healthy body, and eat cake! or froyo, or whatever. lol.
    love you!!! xoxoxox

  20. Just another reason I love reading your blog. You are so real and honest. Thank you for always being so straightforward. I love your approach to food and healthy lifestyle. Eat balanced because it makes you feel good – with some “fun” stuff thrown in because, well, those make you feel good too!
