Les Mills’ MegaMadness Event Recap!

Hi you guys!

Wow. Yesterday was a doozy. More about that later though–we have an incredible recap to get to!

And it’s not incredible because I am writing it (okay, maybe a little bit….haha), it’s incredible because the event was beyond amazing. Beyond my wildest dreams amazing!

No one is paying me to say that, by the way. ;) All opinions are my own, but as a Les Mills blogger, I was asked to blog about the event. So here it is!

Les Mills’ MegaMadness Event Recap!

Just real quick as a background–Les Mills is the leading group fitness company in the world, and has over 100,000 certified instructors. Millions of people take Les Mills classes every week! And, Les Mills has partnered with Reebok (another fantastic brand) to bring even more fitness awesomeness to people all over the globe.

Les Mills MegaMadness Event Recap

Fighting globesity is their number one purpose, and they are well on their way–because they change lives daily. In fact, my life was changed when I first took my BodyPump initial training in October 2010, and I haven’t looked back since. And that brings us to this event…..

As a Les Mills blogger I was invited to attend the MegaMadness Event in Las Vegas this past weekend. <—-more in that post about what it is.

MegaMadness opened on Friday night, and closed late Saturday night. And smashed into 24+ hours was incredible fitness experiences, new friends, incredible learning opportunities, moments of clarity, lots of laughs, smiles, sweat, and even tears. It was magical, beautiful, inspiring, and completely epic.

I know epic is a word that is used a lot, but if there is an event that perfectly matches that word, it would be this event.

{There were also optional advanced trainings on Thursday & Friday, so I  attended a CXWORX Advanced Training on Friday. I will recap that on a later date because it deserves its own post!}

Friday

The event opened Friday evening in the main ballroom of the Aria Convention Center (in the Aria Hotel), in Las Vegas. On stage the lights began to dim & do cool things, music started blaring, and we who were enjoying passed appetizers, some small talk with new friends, and drinks (I don’t drink alcohol, so I was sipping my water like a boss), made our way right to the front of the room near the stage.

The Reebok/Les Mills fashion show had begun!

It was a really cool ‘show’! The top Les Mills fitness trainers in the world were wearing some of the new Reebok/Les Mills line, and were doing workouts to the music–except super fast paced, and with a whole lot of flare! The music was a mix of songs, and each time the song changed, the trainers would change and begin a new type of workouts (Pump, GRIT, S’hbam, Combat, etc.).

Les Mills MegaMadness Event Recap

It was seriously breathtaking–the coolest fitness fashion show I’ve ever seen.

After a bit of fun from some cool circus brothers (cool talent!), we were kicked out of the humongous ballroom so the staff could set up the (1000!!!!!) bars & benches for BodyPump the next morning. <–Yes, 1000 bars & benches. I know.

I left around 9:30 to head back to the hotel. I pumped, got stuff ready for the next day, checked on baby Lily (sound asleep), kissed Jared good night (he was already in bed), and fell into a deep sleep.

Saturday

Bright and early I headed back to the convention center to get in line for the BodyPump class!

I entered the ballroom that had been magically transformed into a gigantic BodyPump class overnight, at just about 7:00a.m.

Les Mills MegaMadness Event Recap

Oh my gosh! The energy in the room was crazy high, and practically palpable.

I took pictures (obviously)

All my essentials–Deep Blue Rub (ahhhhhmazing essential oil rub for sore muscles), Core Power protein drink & towel, and Balance Bar protein bar.

{Linking up with Jenn for WIAW as I show you some of my eats from the day!}

And had to snap one with long-time blog reader, Breanne!

Les Mills MegaMadness Event Recap

She teaches BodyFlow, and it was fantastic to get to meet, hangout, and workout with her!

After the trainers came out onto the stage, and there was a bit of some fun announcements & welcomes, it was time to workout!

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

And workout we did.

We did BodyPump 90!! <—which no one has seen yet since they just filmed it in January! We all felt super special. ;) {We are about to launch BP 89 in our gyms in about 1.5 weeks}

And boy was BP 90 TOUGH! I seriously got my butt handed to me. It felt so good though.

And man was it FUN! I can’t put into words how very cool it was to do one of my favorite workouts with 1000 other people who love that exact same workout. It was MAGIC!

At the end, the trainers bowed. They should, they rocked that! I learned so much from their cueing and the way they taught, just by taking that class. Even if that was it, I would’ve been so glad I attended MegaMadness!

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

Luckily though, it was jussssst beginning!

After I ate some more, cleaned up a bit, and grabbed my stuff, I headed into a workshop room to listen to a presentation about the future of fitness.

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

It was mind-blowing the technology that is already being used to forge fitness forward. I am excited to see more of it happening, and Les Mills/Reebok jumping on those trains in the future.

{You could choose workouts, workshops, education sessions, etc. during each hour block–that is one I chose to attend. I know BodyStep was the workout happening at that time in the main ballroom though.}

Then I grabbed my stuff & went to the restroom to pump!

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

Jared had baby Lily for the day, but I still needed to pump of course.

Then it was time for CXWORX class!

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

I was right near the front, and it was fabulous. ;)

We did CX 15. Of course it was tough (doable, but tough. As is all LM programs)!

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event RecapLes Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

And because I was so so sore in my entire core from the previous day’s CX advanced training, it was extra tough. I almost died during track 2 (the infamous hover track).

After that it was time to visit the vendor booths, the Reebok store, and the photo booths (with a friend)–to take pictures with the elite master trainers.

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event RecapLes Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

Haha.

I got to try a Quest Bar for my 2nd time ever!

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

{I ate the Cinnamon Roll Quest Bar while watching some of BodyCombat a bit later on. That flavor is REALLY good!!}

Anyways-about that time Jared had arrived with baby Lily! I was so excited to see him and the littlest Les Mills instructor….

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

Jared made ALL of this possible–that I could attend and be a bit of a mom too. It was so very amazing & selfless of him to let me come this weekend!!

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

We ate lunch together in the room where lunch was provided (so yummy! lots of greens, fresh veggies, all kinds of meats, and fruit)

And baby Lily was the STAR of that room. Seriously. We all of a sudden became the most popular table. She is pretty magnetic, huh?! We liked to think it was because we were so awesome that everyone was stopping by & smiling at us….but no. She stole the show. Hands down! :)

That was such a fun hour or so to hang out with my all-time 2 favorite people! <3

She started getting fussy (so ready for her nap), so Jared strapped her into the Ergo, and we said our goodbyes. He ended up letting her sleep in the Ergo as he walked all around Las Vegas hotels. Haha! Isn’t he a gem? He didn’t want to get in the car just yet (to drive to our friends’ house–he had checked out of the hotel because we were staying with them Saturday night), because baby L doesn’t SLEEP in the car for short rides. EVER. Best daddy & husband ever.

So while they were wandering the hotels of LV, I was watching the CUTEST launch of Les Mills’ newest program: Born to Move!

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

Pretty much the cutest kids’ fitness program ever. Seriously, so adorable.

After that, it was time to take BodyAttack.

My first entire BA class ever! And it was ROCKIN’. It was a LOT harder than I expected it to be, but I loved it! It’s a sports-inspired cardio program, and once again, I got my fitness level checked. ;)

No pictures, because I was busy trying to keep up. I really liked that class!

I checked the board for what was going on:

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

Saw that BodyCombat was next (it’s just not my thing…but most people LOVE that program), so I went and pumped and charged up my phone.

I did watch a little bit, and WOW. Lots of hardcore people in that room!

Then, it was TIME.

To be a GRIT participant…..

I signed up for GRIT Plyo, and once again that day, got my butt KICKED.

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

It’s amazing how tough a workout can be with just having a bench & risers, a plate, and your body.

OUCH.

{For the record, GRIT is way harder as a participant than as a coach…because we are required to get out on the floor and coach–so we don’t do every single rep. I learned this once again on Saturday.}

If you want results, go to a GRIT class!

By this point I was really tired. And gross. And hungry. So another change of clothes, hardboiled egg, protein drink & bar it was!

The next thing up was one of the most inspiring sessions of all: Kyle Maynard spoke to us.

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

Kyle is an athlete, writer, and inspirational speaker….and he was born with arms that end at the elbows, and legs that end at the knees. He lives, and does everything we can do.

He is the first person to crawl to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. He is also a Cross Fit athlete (and owner of his own Box), elite wrestler, and crazy amazing in so many ways.

I was brought to tears as I listened to him–his ability to look past his disability and live by “no excuses” was incredibly inspiring. I encourage you to read a bit about him–he seriously rocked my world, and made me realize just how amazing the human spirit really can be.

After that amazing session, I kind of was like “how can the next class measure up?”

Oh, but deliver it did. That class brought me to tears too-mostly because it was so freeing and beautiful.

I took BodyFlow with about 600 or so other people in the dark.

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event Recap

With us in white and wearing glow-sticks, it was an other-worldly experience. Seriously. I was truly moved. (Crazy how fitness can do that?!)

And THAT is the next program I really want to train in!!!

As we lied on our mats at the end of the class and meditated, I just felt so much gratitude, peace, love, and a sense of knowing I was in the exact place I was supposed to be in. It was surreal, and hard to explain, but it just affirmed to me that this passion of mine is real, and it has made me so much more thankful for my body, my family, and my ability to fight through the obstacles placed in my path.

In other words, the Les Mills’ family is just that–family!

As the MC took the stage one final time, he said a few words, announced a few things, and the event was mainly over.

BUT, there was an after-party at the Aria’s own nightclub, so the night hadn’t ended just yet!

Because my husband and the car were at my friends’ house about 20 minutes away, and the party started 1 hour after the end of BodyFlow, I pumped, and got dressed (and a bit cleaned up with paper towel showers ;) in the bathroom. Don’t worry, I wore a lot of deodorant, lotion, and put my hair in a headband to hide that schtuff.

Besides, a few other girls did the exact same thing. BOOM.

To the night club we went!

We ate passed appetizers (lots of chicken on skewers for moi), danced to music (it was a tad too loud for my liking), and then, about an hour after it began, the head trainers in the West Coast office got up by the DJ to announce the Les Mills Tribal Awards.

And then….

my name was called!

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event recap

I won one of the Tribal Awards for excellence in teaching my classes and being a part of the Tr1be! I was totally shocked. (And totally not sure she had said my name…so it took me a moment to realize she announced my name in her New Zealand accent).

There were three awards (one for each of their purpose statements “One Tribe” “Be Brave” “Change the World”), and I won the “One Tribe” Les Mills Tribal Award.

What?!

Jared joined me a bit later, and we drank some water & sprite, celebrated together, hung out for a bit, and then called it a night around 10 p.m.

Les Mills' MegaMadness Event recap

I was emotionally, physically, and mentally exhausted….in a really, really good way.

I went to bed Saturday night feeling oh so thankful and oh so sore. <3

**A HUGE thank you to my husband for doing pretty much everything to make this possible (including all baby L stuff all weekend long), baby Lily for being such a good sport & so cute, and Les Mills for inviting me! **

******

Could ya tell I loved my time at the event?! haha.

Have a WONDERFUL day! <3

What Les Mills program is YOUR favorite??! Who is going to come with me to MegaMadness next time?!?!? What award are YOU really proud of??!

Isn’t it wonderful to have such a supportive and encouraging husband? My husband and baby are coming to San Fran with me this weekend so I can run Rock n Roll San Fran. Similar to you, I was given an opportunity I couldn’t pass up – and it’s such a good feeling to know that I have the support to be a mom – and a runner.

Glad you had a great time. Thanks for sharing!

  9. I’m so glad you got to go and experience that event. I know from the smaller-scale Les Mills events that I’ve attended, they always go above and beyond and you walk away feeling amazing. It’s funny that BODYCOMBAT isn’t your thing, because it’s not mine either. :)

I would have LOVED to see the Reebok fashion show and done BODYFLOW in the dark. Overall, glad you took your camera and did some recaping for those of us in the Tribe that couldn’t make it.

    Congrats on your Tribal Award.

  16. I was wondering how you knew what kia kaha meant! Have now looked up how Les Mills started. I knew it was a common gym here in NZ but i had no idea it was started up by New Zealanders. Feeling irrationally proud of my little old country now. Funny that you found her hard to understand even with your own name! :)

  17. What a great weekend, you are badass!

  18. Such a great recap! I still feel at such a loss for words trying to explain the magnitude of it all to people (especially non-LM people). I’m so so glad we got to meet! And pump! Ahhhh! 90! I can’t wait until it’s released because it’s going to be such a flood of nostalgia!

Kyle’s talk before Flow – oh man! “What’s your why?” “Not dead, keep going!” Inspiration extreme and then into my favorite format (and I think the only Q2 release we got on Saturday – relaunch next week! Eeek!). SO MUCH emotion. I was beyond moved.

I attempted Step after Pump, but I get so afraid I’m going to trip and die! LOL. I may be ready to officially say it’s “not for me.” And Vive was definitely more intense than I expected! I LOVE Combat though (maybe you should give it another chance? ;)) and it was so fun to get a preview of what’s to come. I’m definitely IN LOVE with BodyJam and Sh’Bam though. Jam more, but there’s a Sh’Bam training coming up near me this summer so I might make the leap :)))) CX is still in my mind though.

Congratulations again on your award! So exciting! Dancing the night away was exhausting, but so fun. It was so great to get to know some of those big names on a different level.

I’m also jealous that you go to work out with the Smart Bar and Smart Step- those definitely beat the tired, old equipment we have at my gym. :) Man- this makes me miss teaching Pump SO much. 20. Hi Annette,
I love your blog. It’s so encouraging to hear thoughts and see pics from someone who loves so many of the same things. I really enjoyed reading this post. I would love to go to a Les Mills event someday. I just signed up for Bodypump initial training the first weekend of May. (I wrote to you asking about Bodypump several months ago and you were nice enough to write me back and give me your opinions, etc. I couldn’t do it then, but everything has worked out so I can go forward with the initial training now.) I am nervous, but also very, very excited!
