Postpartum & Baby: 1 Month

Hi you guys!

How are you all doing?

I returned to my Monday morning class, and it was so fabulous! I love teaching that BP/CX class because it’s midmorning and so it’s a bunch of moms–and they’re all so fun to be with. They think I am crazy, I get to kick their butts, and we all laugh about being a mom (and now I’m part of the club! wahoo!)

It’s hard to leave Lily, but boy do I love and need that gym time.

In other news, who is glad it’s a holiday week here in the US?!

ME.

postpartum & baby: 1 week

Postpartum & Baby: 1 Month (Body, Mind, Baby)

Well, it’s been a MONTH. Crazy.

Technically tomorrow she will be 1 month (the 27th), but she turned 4 weeks on Sunday, so I figured I’d do the update in between.

Body

As I said before, a woman’s body is amazing! It’s crazy that just a month ago I was giving birth to our sweet baby Lily, and now I am back at the gym teaching fitness classes.

The miracle of that does not go unnoticed by moi.

I’ve gotta say, I definitely attribute my quicker recovery (in getting back to the gym) to working out throughout my pregnancy, genes, being a younger mama, good luck, and having a mostly drug-free birth. I’m not sure which one helped the most, but I bled for about 2 weeks, and felt ready (as in my body was okay) to do a workout at 2.5 weeks postpartum (which I did).

My doc’s suggestion was simply “wait until you stop bleeding & when you feel okay to, you can do a workout/teach fitness class.”

And that’s what I did!

I realize not everyone’s pregnancy/birth is the same, and thus, each person’s recovery will be different as well. This is simply my experience with this birth and recovery. I feel grateful that I’ve been able to get back to the gym though, I missed it!

My body is normalizing a bit more –I fit into more of my ‘tighter’ jeans–but my middle is still quite squishy (and wider than before too), I don’t really have a waist, the girls are big, and I feel like…I just had a baby. Hah.

Well I did, so there’s that.

{wider waist with a side of messy bathroom. BOOM.}

I’ve been loving the ability to feel sore in my abs again though. Teaching CXWORX is gonna do amazing things for my wider, flabbier midsection, so I am stoked about that. Plus having a strong core again will help me in my fitness game-which is pretty cool.

It’s been nice to use my post-baby body to lift some weights too. I have strong legs (aka bigger thighs), so it makes me feel powerful & awesome when I get to squat with weights. And boy have my legs/glutes been sore this past week. Yowzers!

I’ve taught 1 Zumba class & done a few cardio workouts these past 1.5 weeks, and I felt fine through them all. I am more out of breath than I was before I was pregnant, but that’s to be expected. Oh, and I definitely can’t run as fast (yet) as I used to.

So slowly but surely my body is making a comeback. Woot!

Mind

The first week my mom was around, so I was able to get in more naps AND have food and have the apartment cleaned. So that was killer awesome. I felt over the moon awesome about having a new baby!

The second week we had friends bring us dinners (thank you!), but hello no housework getting done & less sleep. I felt very confined to our apartment and so I was going a bit stir crazy. I cried a bit that 2nd week, and I also got sick for 2 days, so that wasn’t my favorite. And there were several nights I was like “oh my goodness!! Please stop waking up!” So yah, my mind was jello.

The third week Lily’s sleep schedule began to normalize, which was helpful for my REM cycles & sanity….. I started feeling like I might have this new mom thing down. My sister came into town for the weekend and commented that I was doing a great job–so I took that as a sign that I wasn’t totally messing up this new life of mine, or messing up Lily.

Phew.

baby 1 month

And near the end of her first month, we’ve been able to get her into more of a groove (somewhat—with newborns there really is no ‘schedule’, but we’re better able to anticipate whereabouts she’ll go to bed for the night and when she’ll probably wake up). Each day and night brings its surprises, but I feel like I ‘get’ her much better which helps my mind feel more settled.

But of course I’ve had my breakdowns here & there (what new mom hasn’t?!?). There are some evenings where I just wish she’d go to bed already (!!), there are some afternoons I wish I could get something completely done in one sitting (any email you’re expecting from me? Might take another month or so to write it….), and there are some mornings I wish I didn’t have to wake up yet because I feel so unrested, but yet Lily is hungry so I must.

But through it all I know I am meant to be a mom to Lily. I feel SO blessed to be where I am! And I feel very at peace that this is what I’m meant to do at this time. Tears, breakdowns, happy moments, marathon feeding sessions, laundry loads out the wazooo, spit up, smiles, laughter, snuggles, and baby coos are a part of who I am now. And that makes me over the moon happy!

And so does this picture:

1 month baby

hah!

Baby Lily

She is such a doll! I seriously love her so so much. <3

baby 1 month

Seeing as she is a month old now, we’ve been able to figure out some things about her.

baby Lily likes:

  • her swing
  • being ‘held’ in the Ergo while the adult carrying her is moving
  • being held
  • being snuggled
  • eating alllll the milk!!
  • sleeping (especially on her side)
  • kisses from us
  • dancing around the room in my arms
  • my singing (she’s like the only person in the world who does….so I’ll take it!)
  • my voice in general (it calms her down….and that is SUCH a special feeling for me!)
  • showering with one of us

showering baby 1 month

baby Lily does not like:

  • her arms being swaddled by her side (straight jacketed)
  • sleeping on her back
  • baths
  • being put down when she is napping or asleep (so moving her is triccckkkkyyy)
  • cold hands
  • startling loud noises
  • waiting to eat
  • just sitting in her carseat if she’s awake (the car must be moving and/or she has to be asleep to like the carseat)
  • taking a bottle

Even though she has likes/dislikes, she is actually a really chill baby. She cries when she wants to eat (NOW!), and when she doesn’t want to be put down, but other than that she just fusses when her tummy is too full, she is putting herself to sleep, or when she wants to be picked up.

She has screamed cried only a few times and each time it was because she wanted food RIGHT THEN. (It was in the car, so I couldn’t feed her right away).

We feel really blessed that she isn’t a huge crier (at least so far)–I think I would go craaaaazy if my baby cried all night long. So mad props to any of you who had colicky babies!

She is really expressive too. She has a bazillion different faces she makes all throughout the day and it just cracks me up! I love that she smiles once in awhile too–especially when she’s sleeping. Too precious.

She hasn’t thrown up in the past 2.5 days, so we’re taking that as a sign that we simply need to be uber vigilant that she is burped really well each time she eats (which is what we’ve been trying), so hopefully we’re on the upside of all of that drama?

She doesn’t like taking a bottle though, so that sucks. She drinks it, but not well or happily. Hopefully she’ll get the hang of it eventually?

She also has been sleeping about 6-6.5 hours most nights lately, for which we are grateful! However she usually goes to bed for the night at like 11:30 p.m…..so yah, that is tough on me. She wants to play and eat from 9-11 p.m most nights, which is when I want to be in bed, so hopefully with time we’ll move up that bed time to match mama’s schedule a bit more. ;)

She is SUCH a blessing to have around. I love baby Lily! She is the sweetest little girl too–I wish you all could meet her!

I sure love being her mama. <3

When my son was 1-2 months he was up until 11-midnight. So tiring! Now at 5 months he goes to bed at 7:00 every night. Starting a routine at 2 months and him starting daycare got us on a schedule. Daycare wears him out!

  2. gosh she is so darn cute and such a mix of both of you, don’t you think??? get out the old baby pictures and do a side by side!!

  3. Shes so so cute! I can see so much of you in her. You look ridiculous amazing. Keep rocking it

  4. A lot of babies until 6-8 weeks find their bedtime being 10-11PM at night. Here’s how I thought about it … the later she went to bed, the longer stretch of sleep I got at night. If Em was going to sleep 6 hours straight I would rather have it 11PM-5AM than 9PM-3AM you know what I mean? I think around fish weeks we started SLOWLY inching her bed time closer to 8:30.

lily is just absolutely precious! i love her cute headbands :)

and you do NOT look like you just gave birth a month ago. wow! that’s amazing that you’re already back to teaching classes. so inspiring!

  8. When Parker was 1-2 months her bedtime was all over the place (usually closer to 10 o’clock) As she got older and started beign more active during the day (3-4 months) her bedtime quickly dropped earlier. Now if I haven’t put her down by 7:30 she’s basically ready to do it herself!

I loved taking Parker in the shower when she was little, so much easier and happier than trying to get her to lay in the bathtub. Plus with all the spit up it never hurt to get an extra rinse in:)

    • That is such good advice/thoughts on your experience. And helps a ton. Thanks!!

Isn’t the shower with babies the best?!?

Lily is a beauty :) I love that last picture of her… and you, momma, are looking wonderful! As far as advice, I have none to offer as I don’t have any children, but I just wanted to chime in and say I fully appreciate you being open and honest with all your readers.

  10. Aww I loved hearing all of this! So glad you guys are feeling more adjusted! It sounds like you all are in a great spot for Lily only being 4 weeks old! I really can’t believe it’s already been a month… And I still haven’t met her! Ahhh. Can’t wait for next week! And wow – that’s awesome you only bled for two weeks. I’m really wondering if I bled for so much longer because of all the drugs I had to take?! Hmmm. Interesting. Can’t wait to chat more about everything! Hugs!

    • OH! And we finally gave Hunter a “bed time” and started a bedtime routine around 6ish weeks I think? We put him down around 7:30 – 8 PM, then he woke around 10 – 10:30 PM for a feeding, then would (sometimes) wake around 3 AM for a feeding, then his wake time for the day would be at 7:30 AM. Before he was 6 weeks, his bed time was late – like 11ish.

Good to know about the 6 week/bed time thing. I appreciate that info!

  15. Addie goes down around 7pm. When she was closer to Lily’s age, she went down at more like 8 or 8:30. But we kept creeping it up earlier and earlier haha. Now she (normally) sleeps 7pm-7am. :)

Lily is adorable! Love the pictures!

Girl, it’s almost like you didn’t have a baby at all!!! You look great!!!

  17. I have had two kids (now ages 5 and 3) + one due in April. With my babies I started putting them down for the night at 6.30! I figured it was a good idea to start their bodyclock routines right from the start. They’d still wake for feeding a few hours later but it saved my sanity getting their bedtime nice and early :) Both kids sleep 7-7 every night because we got the habit ingrained, lol. Or at least I like to tell myself that…!
Lily is so cute. And she has grown fast!!! It looks like you’re doing an ace job as Mama :)
