Postpartum & Baby: 1 Week

Hi friends!

Sorry to interrupt the birth story telling, but I like doing updates on Tuesdays for some reason? And besides, I like a little drama. 😉

So hang on, the rest of the birth story is coming at ya soon!

(p.s. it takes a lot of time to write those, and little Lily has most of my attention right now, so thanks for being patient!)

Postpartum: 1 Week (Body, Mind, Baby)

Lily turned 1 week old on Sunday, and thus, I am 1 week postpartum, so here is a little update for ya about us!

Body

The female body is an amazing, amazing thing. I have a HUGE respect for it. It’s been so magical to be a part of it all!

I just carried Lily for over 9 months (hah! closer to 10), and soon after she was born my uterus began to shrink back down to its ‘normal’ size. My belly also got smaller just hours after having Lily.

So cool & so crazy.

I bled a lot right after, which is normal, but it was definitely a weird sensation. And I was quite sore for 3 days–making it kind of tough to walk!

As for other ‘body’ stuff: My belly area is quite squishy, the girls are large & in charge, and I have huge circles under my eyes. I would say that my body is bouncing back pretty quickly though-and by about 5-6 days after birth, I felt more like my normal self.

Minus the whole sleep thing. My body does best on a lot of sleep….so those first few days were quite intense. I was kind of on a ‘high’ from having given birth, so that helped with the sleep deprivation, but I definitely felt the affects of it all once we were home.

Having my mom come & stay with us was brilliant! I am so grateful she came. It helped to be able to sleep without worrying about Lily, and to be able to shower & have a clean home & food cooked. I think that was a huge factor in my feeling more like myself so quickly!

(so if you can, have your mom come stay with you right after birth!!)

I am definitely more jiggly than I’ve ever been, but that is to be expected. I know I have a ways to come in regards to fitness too, but that will come when I am in the clear to go to the gym again. I’m not worried really at all about my ‘post baby’ body…probably because I know I have it within me to come back fighting & regain my strength. 😉

postpartum: 1 week pic:

postpartum: 1 week

I do fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans already, but that doesn’t really mean much.

Overall I feel good, body wise. I am SO proud of what my body has just accomplished! That in and of itself is something to celebrate. The fitness & strength will come, but I am definitely soaking up the fact that I just carried a baby & gave birth to that baby. <3 Once again, the body is an incredible thing! I feel so so blessed in that regard.

Mind

This first week has been good, tough, fun, hard, emotional, wonderful, and totally crazy. I have felt pretty much every emotion under the sun….and then add to that the sleep deprivation, and you’ve got yourself a nice mix of what I’ve been feeling.

The first day in the hospital was crazy good. Then came the jaundice thing and I totally lost it. I was so so emotional, sad, frustrated, and angry. I was really angry. Plus it didn’t help that some of the nursery nurses were not kind.

I cried several times while Lily dealt with the jaundice thing for those 20 hours. I also didn’t sleep more than 3 hours during that time. Yikes!

After we got home from the hospital things settled down & Lily nursed great again. The peacefulness of being home did wonders for me & my emotions, and I felt overwhelmed with love for Lily. I am so so elated to be her mama!

Having my mom come & stay with us helped me emotionally too. It was great to have someone to talk to, to ask questions of, and to have that incredible support. I think that helped my emotional stability so so much!

Baby Lily-1 week old:

postpartum: 1 week

I already love being a mama! It is overwhelming, but it is really awesome. I feel like I’ve taken it all mostly in stride, and I attribute this to being VERY ready to become a mom. Not only was I married for a few years before having Lily, I also had to wait extra AFTER my due date to get her in my arms. 😉 It was like I was willing to do anything to have her (ahem, yes, I did anything–castor oil, much?!?), and so being a mom is worth any price.

However, I don’t love the fact that my sleep is interrupted every few hours…. :/ I obviously knew this would happen, but dang it is tough to feel ‘more emotionally stable’ when you’re running on less sleep than you’ve ever had to before! My mom says Lily is a wonderful baby though, so I count my lucky stars that it isn’t even less sleep!

Overall my postpartum mind is pretty good. The emotional roller coaster has been quite the ride though!

Baby Lily

She’s perfect. That’s the update.

😉

postpartum: 1 week / baby

She is a strong little girl! All the nurses commented at one time or another about how strong her legs & arms were. She also has a very stubborn will (I think I knew that before she arrived. hah!), so it is imperative that I feed her immediately when she wants to be fed, or else she’ll rebel & cry a bit before sucking, just to show me how very annoyed she is that I didn’t grab her sooner.

She eats really well too. She loves to eat! She latched on pretty quick after birth, and fed well. However, during that stay in the nursery under the bilirubin lights, she fed horribly. She wouldn’t latch on well, and she’d just cry & cry. That was so tough on me! We had to feed her through a tiny tube as she sucked on my finger….and boy did I hate every minute of that!

Luckily she latched totally fine again once we were home, and has eaten really well ever since. She feeds every 2-3 hours, and has gone a few 4 hour stretches. We’re trying to help her have those longer stretches at night. 😉

postpartum: 1 week / baby

She fills diapers quickly, she naps well, and she is a pretty calm baby. She only gets fussy when she has to burp, wants to feed, or when she is done with her swing or bed.

She lets us know what she wants when she wants it, that is for sure! She doesn’t cry much actually, so we know that when she does, it is a legit reason.

Like I said, my mom said she’s been so impressed with Lily & how well she’s doing (and my mom’s seen a loooooooot of babies), so we feel uber blessed! I personally think it’s because Lily was inside of me for so freaking long, and wasn’t forced out of her home before she was ready. But that is just my opinion.

Lily is the most adorable little angel, and we feel blessed to be her parents! <3

postpartum: 1 week / baby

*******

Well, I hope to go on a short outing (to the library outside-drop off box, hah!) with Lily today-wish us luck!

Have a WONDERFUL day!

Do YOU know how early/late YOU were born??! Mamas: How did YOUR first week postpartum go?? Any tips for me moving forward?? Did YOU struggle with jaundice babies at all??

  2. The day I left the hospital with my first my husband was winged and we got stationed and had to move a week later. With my second we were out early because my first had gymnastics, soccer, etc. I think staying busy helps keep baby blues away but I’m the kind of person who would go nuts sitting on my couch the first 2 months! Congrats on the prepregnancy jeans, I always refuse to wear maternity after I have the baby and squeeze myself into regular right away even though they dont fit quite the same for a couple weeks :). I know the weight doesn’t matter right away but it’s still a good mental feeling for sure!

  3. Mama, you look fabulous! It is SO weird seeing you without a baby bump though… Kind of blowing my mind. Lily is such a precious little nugget. I just want to snuggle her little cheekies!

I was born 2.5 weeks early, and I weighed 8 lbs 4 ounces. Crazy, right?!

  5. You look awesome! Lily is so precious! I know towards the end you wanted it all over with and I’m sure felt beyond uncomfortable, but I am 24 weeks today and just don’t look “big.” I know everyone carries differently and all is fine and normal right now, but I want to embrace this pregnancy and there’s really only a small bump to embrace. Certain days it’s just more emotional for me in that regard. Meh.

And I’m only 24 weeks and already getting impatient and just want to meet her! I can’t imagine going almost 42 weeks! You’re a superstar! I was supposed to be a Halloween baby, but came on the 28th. I was hoping Lily would be born on my birthday but I’m glad she came earlier. :)

    • I def didn’t look big around 24 weeks either, so no fretting! I promise the bump will be legit soon enough :) It is neat to see how differently each woman carries, actually.

I am glad she came before the 28th too….or else that’d be another day of waiting! hah.

  6. Congats!!!! She is absolutely beautiful! You look amazing, and will no doubt be back to your pre-baby body in no time!

Enjoy the new role :) The best is yet to come!

  7. girl you look amazing!!! loved reading this. And baby Lily is perfect.

I was early by several weeks. An evening baby on July 6th. I should have been a Leo, but I know that I am meant to be a Cancer (as I am).

  9. Loved reading every bit of this! So glad to hear things are going so well. I hear ya on the sleep deprivation thing. As I told you, I don’t do well with it either! Just remember that it’s only a phase, and “this too shall pass”. I felt like it suddenly got so much easier right around 8-9 weeks because Hunter slept so much longer and started to understand the difference between day and night.

Well, you know Hunter’s story, and yep, he had jaundice along with everything else he went through. Jaundice was actually the least of my concerns. Regardless, we both have two healthy babies, and we’re so blessed! Can’t WAIT to see you all! Hugs!

  11. I was 2 entire weeks late! 12 more hours and they would have induced my mom. So, I was sure that my little one would do the same – but surprised us ashen my water broke 3 days early! Baby’s sure do have a way of doing there own thing don’t they?

My biggest advice post partum would be to get out of the house! Don’t do anything crazy but a few little trips (to the library dropbox, Starbucks drive through, the end of your street etc.) will help you to feel more confident when your body and baby are ready for some bigger trips. Plus it keeps you from going stir-crazy!

    • Babies TOTALLY come on their own time. For sure! hah.

I love that advice–and got out of the house 1 time already today! small wins 😉

  12. What a great update. I am glad things are going so well! You are right where you should be for 1 week post partum (from my experience with Luke!) – enjoy this time and snuggle Lily for me. I love all of her pink things – so cute!!

  14. You’re doing great, girl. I really really struggled emotionally for the first 5 weeks, but then things got much better. Getting more sleep certainly helped, too. 😉 So I’ll be crossing my fingers for you that you get her on a good sleep schedule soon!

Oddly enough my husband and I just found our long form birth certificates as we emptied out a drawer this weekend. Turns out I was 7lbs 6oz and 41 weeks :) He was 39 weeks and 7lbs 4oz.

Lily is gorgeous and it sounds like you are doing amazing with her!

  16. Courtney says:

Lily is a beauty, just like her momma! :) I was born a week late, but was only a little over 5 pounds, so I think it was good that I hung out in the womb a bit longer.

  17. what a beautiful girl Lily is!

  18. Gosh! Lily is a DOLL! Perhaps we can arrange a marriage between her & Atlas. I promise I will raise him to be a perfect gentlemen. 😉

Cannot wait to read the rest of your birth story. You look incredible and I can relate to so many things you wrote in this post. The week my mom stayed with us was THEE Best and I’m already counting down to her next visit. Being a mom is such an emotional roller coaster…nobody could have prepared me. But you’re right – I think most of the intense emotions are due to the lack of sleep.

I’m glad breastfeeding is going good for you. The first 2.5 weeks were terrible for me. Atlas ate like a champ, so I was grateful for that but oh my word – it hurt SO bad. I cried pretty much around the clock because the pain from breastfeeding was so terrible. But luckily I’ve toughened up, so it has gotten better.
Ashley@Cupcakesncrunches recently posted…Atlas Luke Andrews – The Birth StoryMy Profile

    • thanks, Ashley! Yes, let’s set Atlas & Lily up please!! :)

It def hurt the first 3 or so days before my milk came in–but I used the lanolin cream. It sounds like it feels better for ya, but you should try that if you haven’t. It was immediate relief!

  19. Oh man! She is just too cute for words!

Loved the update – it’s great to hear how well you’re doing (all things considered, obviously more sleep would be fabulous). Good luck going to the library! :)

Just keep doing what you’re doing. Each day gets a little easier and the calmer you are the calmer baby is! Enjoy the newborn snuggles because the squishiness goes away far too quickly.

And DANG you are looking phenomenal already! :)

    • Thanks, Tina! I am def quite squishy… 😉

She slept better last night, so I am HOPING that we’re on our way to a better schedule. Hah. Hope you’re doing well!

  27. I know that I was born at 12:25PM. My mom still calls me at this time on each birthday. She is soo sweet. She also reminds me that she had to miss lunch, because of it. Apparently, I just wanted to stay in there. lol. I was also two weeks late.

I was super early, but my kids weren’t. One came on his due date, the other two weeks early.

My mom came with both of my boys and it was the best thing ever. She kept us all sane + left me with tons of meals in the freezer. I never would have made it without her.

As soon as you feel up to it, start taking walks. The fresh air is good for you and Lily and it’s a great way to start easing back into activity.

    Congrats!

  31. I was a premature baby by 3 weeks. My first week postpartum was a roller coaster ride of highs and lows. I didn’t struggle with jaundice but did struggle with a baby that wouldn’t latch for breastfeeding and having to use a nipple shield. I also struggled with the lack of family to help, my husband didn’t receive paternity leave like promised, and was on my own to do everything day in and day out. I was not a homebody though. Two days after being home I was shopping at WalMart and running errands.

  34. you look amazing for one week postpartum and more importantly amazing for any person in general! i can imagine that going through birth would make you appreciate your body all the more and therefore worry less about your post-birth appearance. one of my friends spent so much time pre-baby stressing about the weight and once the baby came the stress was all for naught because a) she was too busy loving her baby to care and b) breastfeeding helped the weight fall right off! you have a great outlook and a beautiful girl. the last photo of her with the hand covers is soooo cute!
