Be Yourself

Hey. Hey.

How are you??

In case you missed it, I am still (very) pregnant.

You guys have the best advice & thoughts though, so THANK YOU for your comments. They really helped a lot!

Dying.of.laughter.

I told Jared what the new plan was, and he was all for it. (Anything to put his wife out of misery & get her what she wants! hah) :)

In other news, I am going for a massage TONIGHT. Jared decided it was time to take matters into his own hands (after seeing me lose it a few times) & he found me a place that does prenatal massage nearby & that boasts a good rate of helping ladies go into labor, so I am excited to go!

And if nothing else , I get a massage out of this. ;)

Be Yourself

So yesterday on my lunch break I had visitors. It was SUCH a great distraction & a wonderful afternoon!

Ashley & her adorable baby Hunter came over for lunch, chatting, and a really good time. It was SUCH a blast.

be yourself / blogging

lunch / be yourself

{She kindly brought over butternut squash soup, salad, & cheese. I supplied the bread. Oh and chocolate. Totally winning at life….. ;) }

Among the bazillions of things we talked about (we are both talkers, so our playdates can end up being hours long & it’s so wonderful), we talked about how our favorite blogs to read are those that seem like the blogger is simply herself. She blogs as she’d be in real life. And of course, includes real life stuff–the good, the great, the bad, and yes, sometimes, the ugly.

I don’t like reading blogs that are overly negative, not at all. But I do appreciate when I can relate. If I read a blog that seems perfect all the time, it’s hard for me to want to stick around. #truth

(p.s. I love reading Ashley’s because she is real and totes reflects who she is in real life. Check her out!)

Anyways, so Ashley & I got talking about how our blogging has evolved over time to really match who we are. And that is exactly what I love about blogging nowadays. I get to BE MYSELF.

I definitely used to try to mold my blog & my writing to match other bloggers’ styles, but it did not work out. And I ended up not liking blogging there for awhile. I also tried too hard to constantly give out fitness information & scientific mumbo jumbo. I am a nerd, and I went to school for forever in these topics, so it’s something I love, but not everyone wants to read research every day—got it.

be yourself / blogging

Here is who I am and thus what my blog tends to look like:

  • I make stupid jokes.
  • I am sometimes silly.
  • I can blog/talk about serious stuff too.
  • I wax poetic about things I am passionate about (being a fitness instructor, Jared, my faith, family, being pregnant, eating well, Les Mills classes, disordered eating recovery, gratitude, pushing physical/mental limits)
  • I tell long-winded stories.
  • I think I am hilarious.
  • I try to be thankful, kind, generous, and compassionate.
  • I like to share great articles, info, funny stories, etc. with others.
  • I like creating & doing tough workouts–and then sharing them.
  • I am nerdy & not afraid to own that.
  • I am not a great cook or baker, but when I do those things I have to tell everyone about it.
  • I like lists & bullet points. (ironic much?)
  • I am positive, upbeat, outgoing, and not afraid to be ME.

The one piece advice I’d offer anyone who writes a blog or for anyone who wants to become more confident, a better friend, spouse, girlfriend, or sibling is this: BE YOURSELF.

And as we all know how that finishes….everyone else is taken.

That is the TRUTH. You are you. You are precious. You are special. And there is NO ONE who is just like you. So own it, live it, love it, and flaunt it. ;)

And if you are a blogger, then make your blog YOUR space. Allow it to reflect who YOU ARE.

Not gonna lie, there is nothing worse than feeling like someone you know is totally fake and is pretending to be someone she is not. I end up feeling sorry for that person because she is probably just insecure & needs validation.

So if you don’t feel confident, that is the key–BE YOURSELF. The rest will take care of itself & you’ll attract the kind of people YOU want to be around–and they’ll stick around because they love you for you.

word.

Have a WONDERFUL day! <3

p.s. keep sprinkling me with labor dust & sparkles. Or whatever it is that is supposed to help. Kthanksbye.

When was the last time YOU had a lunch date??! What did YOU eat & who was it with?!? What are some things that makes YOU unique & awesome?!? —>I want to hear it!! What do YOU look for in a blog??

  4. Hahaha — so glad Jared was on board with my genius ideas. And what a good man for arranging a massage for you!

When I first started blogging, I definitely emulated the styles of other bloggers, simply because I didn’t know how to “be myself.” Eventually, I feel like I found my voice and started writing what I wanted to write, how I wanted to write it.

For the record, I love your stupid jokes, your silliness, your passion for the things you love, and of course your lists! (<< I'm a major list lover.)

  5. I could not agree MORE! I really don’t like when you can just feel how fake someone is being. I also enjoy when people share things about their lives. Recipes are great…but I need to enjoy the person to enjoy the recipes- if that makes any sense?? Still crossing my fingers for you! Enjoy the massage

  6. What a super fun date and a great way to pass the time while waiting. And your husband gets lots of bonus points for booking that massage!! hang in there. can’t wait to see this little girl. :)

  7. Hahaha I laughed so hard when I read Carly’s comment too! That’s great! She’s seriously one of my new favorite bloggers. I’m so glad you “introduced” her to me. :)

I had such a wonderful time with you yesterday! We were meant to be friends, that’s for sure. ;) Obviously I totally agree with everything you’re saying here! And for the record, this is one of my favorite posts you’ve written I think. Lotsa good stuff. Funny because I know you were having a hard time deciding what to write about for today, and it turned out to be amazing!

  9. Love this post! It’s so awesome that you and Ashley got together yesterday!

I couldn’t agree more…being yourself is so important. This way the readers can relate. I look for this in other’s blogs (like yours and Ashley’s), but this is what I try to do in my blog as well – I want to be real – what you see is what you get.

  10. Yes! Great message Annette! I think it’s so important to be ourselves when we live. When I start trying new things, like blogging for instance…I think at first I tried to emulate certain people and then I realized it was WAY too much work to do that…so I just was myself, and lo and behold it seemed to work better ;) Who would’ve thought.
I always read blogs because of the person behind the blog. I don’t care if I would never make their recipe, because I love who they are as a person instead, I will always continue to read it.
Sending you labor love right now! Hope the massage helps!

  12. I just have to say you look awesome for being 40+ weeks pregnant. I saw your photo on Ashley’s site and was like “did she have her baby?” because you really do not look pregnant – her kiddo is probably hiding your belly. I was so swollen at the 40+ week mark, and well I had to be induced at 42 weeks as my kiddo was not coming at all. Here’s to hoping the babe comes soon.

  13. This is such an important lesson, especially for new bloggers! I know it took me a long time to figure out how I like to blog. And I also think I’m hilarious :)

  14. Definitely agree that when a blogger tries to force herself into a certain mold, you can always tell and it’s a huge turnoff. I love it when bloggers are actually REAL – nobody has a perfect life, so it’s awkward when people pretend they do online.

Last time I had a lunch date was awhile ago! BUT! This Saturday, my brother and I are going out to lunch and I’m getting a FREEEEEE Hot Fudge Sundae (I have a coupon – and Saturday is my birthday! Woot woot! Bring on the ice cream!).

I think that I’m unique in that I love to give surprises. I love playing “Ninja Nicole” and sneaking into my friends’ “secured” apartment complexes and dropping off a little something on their doorstep – or leaving something fun on their windshield. :) Nothing makes me happier than to make someone else feel special or thought-of.

In the world of blogging, I like reading people’s real-life situations and when they really have found their own “voice”. I agree with you, Annette, it makes it so much more relatable and great to read. :) The more writers are themselves, the more it feels like I’m having a conversation with a friend. :) :)

Let’s hope the massage works!! (Though, I’m telling you, babies born on October 19 are pretty darn awesome! ;) )

    • that is the coolest unique gift that you have! I bet your friends/fam adore you & your Ninja Nicole antics! :)

I know she’ll show up when she’s ready….so I’ll let you know if she’s as cool as you! ;)

  16. 40 weeks!!!! You look amaze-balls!! Best of luck!!! Can’t wait to see her! :)

I read Ashley’s blog and really enjoy it too!!
I just started blogging 2 months ago (but I’ve been lurking around and reading blogs for YEARS!) and I am really trying hard to just be myself. I’m not ready to share pictures of my kids – and no one in real life knows about the blog besides my husband and now sister – but I am giving my authentic self to my readers. I write like I talk…in bullet points, lists and long winded sentences! lol I also don’t enjoy reading blogs about how wonderful everything in your life is….or on the other hand, how terrible it is…all.the.time! As long as you’re being honest and true to yourself I think the authenticity comes through in your writing and writing style! I think lol
Feel good – you still look so amazing!!

Found your blog through Ashley because she’s basically one of my favorite people. ;) We’ve been buddies for a while, and I can’t believe I’m just now “meeting” one of her other friends.
