Being Productive

Hey friends!

How are you all doing?

I LOVED reading through your predictions on Baby Perks’ arrival! (And thank you for the ideas for the bag. There are so many wise readers reading my blog. Wahoo!)

Well, it looks like she’ll be coming either just a few days before her due date or a few days after, according to you all. Sounds good to me! Especially because there are some things I’d like to finish and/or do before she comes, and yah, I have made absolutely no headway on her room since I last said I would.

But in the end, who really cares if her room is ‘perfect’ before she arrives?!

Right?!

It’s just the crazy amount of pressure I put on myself…

Sometimes a lil’ bit of pressure, with a deadline, can be awesome, because then I get things DONE. But sometimes when it’s too much pressure, and it’s without a deadline, it just stresses me out and makes me anxious. Which in turn makes me less productive.

Being Productive

I was thinking about this the other day, actually.

I am more productive when there is a bit of pressure on me in the form of a deadline (either one that is given to me or one I’ve made up).

Go figure?!

productive

But I am NOT very productive if the pressure feels like too much and/or is overwhelming and I don’t have a deadline. (Then I just get anxious, stressed out, and ultimately don’t get whatever it is I need to get done, done.)

Baby girl’s room is, for some reason, overwhelming. Both because there is a lot I feel needs to be done AND there isn’t crazy amount of pressure to get it done because there is no real deadline. (see above–I have no idea when she is actually coming).

Does that make sense?

(And it’s probably why I keep talking about the fact that I’ve done absolutely nothing to move forward with finishing her room….haha)

In other areas of life I literally have to walk around adding deadlines to anything I want to get done-be it personal, blog-related, work stuff, gym choreo, to-do lists, etc.

I might be insane, but I swear it helps to say things/write things in my phone like “I will write 5 thank-you cards by 7:00 p.m.” Or “I will re-new my license by Thursday afternoon.” Or “I will print off the birth plan by 8:30.” (Can you tell what stuff I need to get done?!? hah)

But then when I get to mark them off on my phone?!

Glorious.

Yep. I’m the one who puts an item on a to-do list just so I can mark it off.

Brush teeth? CHECK. CHECK.

Just, you know, sharing the secrets of the genius mind behind the blog. ;)

Being productive FEELS good to me, so I give myself these mini-deadlines and it helps me amp up my excitement to do whatever it is that needs to be done (going to the DMV is gonna be sooooooo fun……), and then in turn, I get to mark it off on the to-do list.

Get stuff done AND get a mini-mood boost by crossing it off the list?!?

Day. made.

Go buy yourself some.

Have a GREAT day! <3

So I am curious– do YOU guys feel the same way I do? Do you function best when there is a bit of pressure and a deadline? And if not, what makes YOU productive?? p.s. What is on YOUR to-do list that YOU’ve been putting off and are NOW going to commit to getting done by setting a deadline!? :)

  1. i do well with deadlines, also. hence, why i never learned from procrastination! haha

  2. As long as you have a few diapers and a crib, I think you’re good to go ;). I hate projects without deadlines too. I think it’s the crazy Type A-ness in us. Sometimes I need to remind myself that things always tend to work out, so I should just take a deep breath and relax. Easier said than done, but still helpful.

    xo

  3. I’m the same way, which is why I’ve only applied to like 10 jobs… I get overwhelmed with everything and then nothing gets done. I need deadlines!

    • Oh man. Job searching is so the worst in that area. Do you have deadlines for yourself? I HAD to do that to myself when I was looking for a job b/c I kept putting it off.

      Hugs!! <3

  4. I’m tooootally the same way. I need a little pressure to help me get stuff done sometimes. And I am definitely one of those people that just adds something to my to-do list so that I can cross it off. Ha! Type A much? ;)

  5. I totally get that! I am much more productive when I’m not overwhelmed and if I only focus on the task I’m doing RIGHT THEN rather than thinking ahead to later. But it’s really hard to do that ;)

  6. LeAnne says:

Oh my…you described me to a “T”! I don’t like someone breathing down my throat saying, “You MUST get this done ASAP!” However, ‘flexible deadlines’ are perfect for me…I have a goal in mind to get things accomplished, yet I don’t have to panic…funny how our minds work like that! lol :)

  7. I work MUCH better under pressure. In fact…I have a hard time learning my choreo for the gym unless the launch is getting super close haha. Whoops

    • Nicole says:

I am right there with you with the relaunch stuff!

Me this morning: “Why, Hello, BP 87….you’ve been in my car for a month and I have to learn you by Saturday……” OH crud! Healthy pressure is on!!

  8. Luckily I’m not a procrastinator. In fact when I know there are deadlines, I try to get those things done way before they’re actually due. I hate having something hanging over my head waiting to get done!

  9. I am a huge list person – there is nothing better than crossing things off a list, or looking at a list full of crossed off things! ;)

  10. Definitely with you an writing things out on a list just for the sake of crossing them off ;-) And I love the feeling of being productive – I find that I’m usually pretty good with just setting a schedule for myself and going with it.

  11. I make a to-do list for myself every single day – it just keeps me accountable (to myself I guess?) and yes, I love crossing things off as the days goes on.

  12. Annie says:

I’m the opposite – I prefer working at my own pace without a deadline. Deadlines stress me out. Needless to say you do not want to be around me during finals!

  13. I had a saying in school, “Tests come and go, but papers are forever!” lol!

  14. I do NOT procrastinate. The second something is assigned for me to do, I DO IT. If I don’t do it within the day, I get really stressed out and have to talk to myself and tell myself that IT’S OKAY and NO ONE WILL DIE. I just like not having a super long to-do list, which most days have. I feel SOOOOO accomplished when I cross almost everything off my list. Like today – EVERYTHING IS DONE!!!!!! Well, until tomorrow! LOL!

And don’t worry, baby Perky will NOT know the difference as to whether or not the room she’s in is DONE or not! Don’t be hard on yourself, you’re carry a child after all, and that’s a hard task in itself!

  15. I love marking things off my to do list!!!! The lack of deadline is so an anxiety creator! I didn’t even realise it. I’ll give you a deadline for the nursery- how about 1 week before her due date. so if she’s earlier, you’re ready ;) Now get to it!

  16. I’m very similar to you! I need a little bit of pressure/a deadline to actually get things done, especially when it effects someone else! A lot of times, I have my husband give me a deadline for something or make a to-do list for me. I’m much more likely to do it when he “asks” me to do something (and when I can check things off the list!)
