Pregnant Fitness Instructor Eats

Hey friends!

Everything’s pretty peachy here. How are you doing?

First, two articles you MUST read:

Second, look what came in the mail the other day!

les mills releases

I love when new Les Mills’ releases come! Now I need to learn ’em…. (the GRIT stuff I’ll learn later, once this baby girl is here, since I can’t coach HIIT very well right now. hah!)

Being a fitness instructor is one of my favorite things to do, but it comes with hard work too. 😉

And now, third, I am going to attempt to answer the questions “what does a pregnant fitness instructor eat? And how much?”

I’ve gotten these questions a bunch of times lately from readers, so I figured I’d write a post on it.

And to be honest the answers are: pretty much everything. and a lot.

But it’s true.

In general I consume food anywhere between 8-10 different times per day.

Sound like a lot? It is! However, each ‘time’ I eat isn’t necessarily a ‘full’ meal. Sometimes it’s only around 200-300 calories. And sometimes it’s 400 or so. Totally depends what time of day, what activity I just did, and how hungry I am.

However, I get nauseous if I eat too much at once, and I get nauseous if I don’t eat soon enough when I am hungry.

Kinda neat, right? The body is smart, yo. Especially when growing a baby!

Also, the biggest thing here is that I have NO idea exactly how many calories I am consuming. I will not be able to give you an exact amount (sorry!) I gave up calorie counting long ago (okay, it was like 2+ years ago, but still!).

BUT I do know that I am gaining a good amount of weight (doc is happy with it), baby girl is measuring right on track, I never let myself get really hungry (and my husband doesn’t let me either, because then I become an angry, unkind wife…), and I feel pretty good–so to me, that means I am consuming in the right range.

Here are the categories I make sure I hit every day in my eats:

  • dairy
  • proteins
  • veggies/fruits
  • healthy fats
  • whole grains
  • ‘fun’ foods
  • drinks

I’ll also usually have a combo of those categories for each meal/snack so I feel more satisfied.

For example dairy + veggies/fruits is way more satisfying then just eating a piece of fruit.

Here are the various categories & what I usually consume from within the category (the pictures will give you an idea of how I combine the foods):

milk, Chobani, cheese, ice cream, fro yo

Each day I have at least 2-3 of something from each of these categories –and they can often come in crazy combos or at weird times of the day. 😉 I used to always have veggies in the morning, but sometimes I can NOT stomach that at all, so they have to wait ’til later. Sometimes I’ll have chips for a snack. And sometimes I’ll drink a diet coke. And even more, sometimes, I’ll have ice cream before dinner. I just roll with how I am feeling.

To be honest I eat ALL day long right now. It so feels like it too, and so, sometimes, I am so bored with fixing meals/making snacks, that I eat the same things over & over again. And there are some days that food doesn’t excite me at.all. (I know, GASP!) It is very crazy to me, especially since in my disordered eating & anorexic days I’d be obsessed with food & think about it all day long….now it’s like “darn, I am hungry again. Well, gotta go find something to eat before I feel nauseous.”

I guess such is life when you must stuff calories in yourself when the body says so. 😉

I teach 5-6 fitness classes (or 5-6 hours) per week, each hour burning anywhere between 500-730 calories. So as you can see, I MUST eat enough to make up for that deficit AND be pregnant.

Hence why I get to eat all kinds of foods. 😉

{yesterday, 33.5 weeks, right after teaching BodyPUMP}

I also drink 4-6 ounces of milk + scoop chocolate whey protein powder (or chocolate milk) after EVERY BP or CX class I teach. So that is another 200-ish calories that I immediately put back in after I teach/workout, and which I am very adamant about!

Immediately after I teach Zumba, I usually drink a sugary drink (lemonade or a slurpee) & eat a piece of fruit.

Also, I drink a crap ton of water. Especially WHILE teaching & right after I am done teaching a fitness class.

Well, there ya have it. Food to me is fuel–some fuel is more optimal than others, obviously, but it’s all JUST fuel. There aren’t any bad foods or good foods, just food. And all of it helps me & especially baby girl have an optimal pregnancy. :)

Have a GREAT day! <3

What are some foods YOU’ve been eating lately??! What is YOUR favorite combo of macros to consume??! Do YOU have any questions for me?! :)

  7. So fun to red how you approach food as a pregnant fitness instructor! I like your approach with your macros – trying to combine 2 or 3. And I can’t even remember the last time I had a Slurpee…and diet Coke is awesome. 😉

  8. LOVE this! I love that we eat and view food so similarly. :) You are doing such a great job at getting in the important nutrients, but giving in to what your body craves too and not beating yourself about the occasional sugary drink or dessert. That’s how it SHOULD be!

  9. Just found your page and I’m so excited that I did! This was a great first post to read. Since I’m new to your blog, I first must say congrats on the pregnancy! That’s super exciting! I LOVE Zumba!!! It’s my main form of exercise. Unfortunately, I injured my foot, so I’ll be taking it easy for a while, but I can’t wait to get back to it!

All your eats look wonderful and I enjoyed reading about your approach to food as a pregnant fitness teacher. It totally makes sense, since you’re not only feeding yourself, but your little one too!

I am loving…. ***drumroll***…. white carbs!!!! hahahaha. No really though, after avoiding white carbs (and all carbs pretty much) for so long, and labeling foods as BAD or GOOD, I’m at a new, awesome place in my life: all foods are okay! It’s all about how I feel after, and if I want a slice of toasted sourdough bread with a banana and honey and almond butter, then by golly I’ll have it and ENJOY it. Eating rocks, and eating stuff that you crave is even better. Now if I crave something, I eat it and then I move on… and LIVE LIFE. wow. what a concept!!!! Before I would crave something and dream about it, and deprive myself of it or find a “healthy substitute” but still want IT. No more, and I find I obsess way less, which means more time to LIVE and be happy. Win Win. Yay! Yesterday’s cravings: raw carrots, peanuts, thin crust cheese pizza and salad with tons of feta. It all tasted amazing, and none of it felt bad, or good, just yummy.
Love you girlie, you’re gorgeous and glowing as ever!!!! Bug Hugs!!! xoxox

  11. lately i have been CRAVING oatmeal every single morning!! Do you count calories at all to make sure you are getting enough?

    • I wish I looooooved oatmeal like some do. It comes & goes for me. So enjoy a bowl for me, mmmkay? :)

I don’t count calories. nope. I go off of hunger/satiety (and I do NOT feel well if I don’t honor it!), my weight gain (which is on track), and baby girl’s measurements (which are on track). :)

  12. Those FLIPS have always been so intriguing to me but I cannot eat them **SAD DAY** :(

Any creepers come up and grab your belly yet? LOL

  13. I love the positvity of this post. You’re just too cute! I would love to do fro yo with you and Janae, ashley and ashley. I don’t wanna put my phone number in the comments, so can you email me? I couldn’t find your email page..I’m prob just missing it!

  14. Love this! I feel like I am eating all the time right now haha. I try to balance my foods the same way you do so it all evens out. :)

  15. Okay that was really a fun post to read…I just found out yesterday i’m having a GIRL!! (YAY!) But I think if I had just matched up what you’re craving/eating and avoiding to what I am craving/eating and avoiding I think I should have known! lol! :)

    • Oh FUN!!!! Congrats!! :)

Yes, that is what I did–found bloggers who knew genders of their babies to check on what they were eating vs. my cravings. Sadly mine was half/half, but so glad I found out quickly what I was having!
