27 Weeks {A Special Tribute}

Hey friends! <3

How’s it hangin’ in your neck of the woods?

I’m doing pretty good!

time for another baby update! I secretly love writing these.

27 Weeks

Baby Perks is just over 27 weeks today and is about the size of a head of cauliflower.

Here’s what Baby Perks has been up to this week:

  • Baby Perks weighs almost 2 pounds and is about 14-1/2 inches long with her legs extended.
  • She’s sleeping and waking at regular intervals….yep, it seems she is most active at night (around 8 pm-9ish), and during the mid-afternoon hours while I’m mostly sitting still at work. She also gets rocked to sleep when I teach, but awakes right after when I stop moving around.
  • She’s opening and closing her eyes, and perhaps even sucking her fingers (aww! she did this in an Ultrasound, it was so cute!).
  • With more brain tissue developing, Baby Perk’s brain is very active now.

And here’s what’s been happening with me this past week:

27 weeks -pregnancy

How far along? 27 weeks (& 3 days)

Jared took this picture (above) plus 2 more, on Sunday within seconds of each other. Just for fun, here they are: (I feel like my belly looks different in each one so it’s annoying to have to pick. SO weird.)

27 weeks -pregnancy

Baby’s size? head of cauliflower

Total weight gain/loss: probably something near 18 lbs? I’ll find out in 2 weeks

Stretch marks? still zilch-o (I’ve been rubbing belly butter on it also)

Sleep: Pretty good! I sleep well when I sleep, but there were 1 or 2 nights where I just kept having to get up to go to the bathroom, so I woke up in the morning feeling less than rested.

Best moment this week: Every time Jared gets to feel her move. Does that count?! :)

Miss Anything? Same things as last week: Lying on my stomach. Not being so hot all.the.time. Getting fuller quicker (it’s sad b/c sometimes I am so hungry but get full wayy fast)

Movement: She is still jabbing, dancing, and moving quite a bit in there. She kicked pretty hard the other day, and it was almost painful (she’s too cute for it to be painful. duh). She likes to stop moving as much once Jared puts his hand on my belly…the little stinker!

Food cravings: Nothing too cray. I’ve been eating a lot of homemade pizza, whole wheat english muffins with jam (so yum!), fro yo, fruit, choc chip cookies, Mexican, strawberry lemonade slurpees (soooo cold & refreshing!), and spinach smoothies.

Food aversions: Thankfully, nothing.

Anything making you queasy or sick: Nothing this week! Wahoo!

Labor Signs: Nope.

  • wanting to lay out by the pool & read….
  • getting up to go to the bathroom allllll night long
  • eating constantly-but unable to eat a lot at once (and when I do, it really is not fun–this keeps happening –grrr! I want to eat more but my body does not like it if I do, so then I eat 10x/day)
  • getting asked “how are you feeling” like a million times per day
  • feeling giddy & then overwhelmed within a 5 minute span
  • wanting to organize our entire apartment….this is still a desire/symptom…we shall see if it actually comes to fruition??!

Belly Button in or out? In.

Wedding rings on or off? On.

Maternity clothes? Nothing new.

Baby items purchased? A few more new things! An Ergo (bought it brand new from a craiglist seller who didn’t want it, but got it for 50% less than what it sells for online. major win!) A pink trash can. An orange blanket. A diaper bag. We also have a car seat, and a Boppy pillow with a cover.

Happy or moody most of the time: really happy! This was a really busy week, so I’ve just been really happy & content. Of course I’ve cried multiple times over random things, but for the most part, I’ve been happy.

Funny moments this week: Uhhhh, this is cool & funny: I awoke early one morning & decided to deep clean our entire apartment plus do 5 loads of laundry (all towels, all bedding, all carpets, etc) before work. Let’s just say I went a little crazy & our place is spaaaaaarkling. Feels SO good.

Looking forward to: Cleaning out the room/office where baby Perks will reside! (Still needing to do this!)

Fitness Thoughts at 27 weeks:

27 weeks -pregnancy

{pics are from yesterday after teaching BP/CX}

  • Once again, fitness-wise I feel really good. Nothing new to report or change. I’m going to continue trucking along until something feels not right.
  • I’ve really liked answering questions about being fit & pregnant. It’s fun to debunk the myths-along with my doctor’s sage advice. Everyone is different though, so listen to your body & your doc. Also, I enjoy staying fit while pregnant, but it’s for my sanity more than anything else! I am okay with the fact that I need those endorphins. :)
  • And, I’ve recently been reading articles on fitness & pregnancy-about elite athletes & pregnancy. You know, the articles that are found in the medical journals….yes I am a nerd to the core. I love all the fitness mumbo jumbo speak b/c it brings me back to my grad school days.

A Special Tribute

I am just over 27 weeks along, and am now at the point in my pregnancy where my mom was when my littlest sister was born.

Yes, my littlest sister (she is the 10th child) was born at 27.5 weeks. The factors that probably led to this: my mom had placenta previa, was over 40 years old, and it was her 10th child (hence why she needed an emergency c-section to get my sister out).

My sister was born at 1 lb 13 ounces, and was so tiny she fit into my dad’s hand. It was the scariest moment of my life when my older sister woke me up that morning in August, 2000 to tell me mom had the baby (remember, she wasn’t due until November, 3 months away!) I immediately started crying & couldn’t even choke out to ask if the baby was okay.

My littlest sister is a fighter, and although she was in the NICU for over 2 months (!!!), she came out of there strong & healthy. She has no known defects or problems because of the amazing care she received and the blessings from heaven that were poured out upon her.

27 weeks-special tribute

{Elisa–holding a nephew. last year}

I am grateful for modern medicine & what it can do, but even more so, for a loving Father in Heaven who gave us the faith & tender mercy to keep Elisa on earth. Elisa (my youngest sibling/sis), is a great 12-year old with a lot of spunk, energy, and zest for life, and I’m so grateful she stuck around! :)

So as I come to this point in my pregnancy, I am simply grateful for the miracle of birth, medicine, and life. And I wanted to share that special story–it means a lot to my family because there were moments when she was in the NICU that we thought we’d have to say our final goodbyes.

    God is good.

  10. WOW! That is just amazing. Your sister is a fighter for sure! You are SO darn cute!!

  11. Beautiful post! I work in a NICU in Toronto doing brain imaging research on preterm babies. It’s amazing to see what modern technology affords us and the incredible care of our doctors and nurses. Not so long ago these babies would not have a chance but nowadays this is not the case. Elisa and you are both stunning! Glad things are going well with the pregnancy. Sending lots of love!

  12. What an awesome story and such a testament to God’s care and goodness, for both your sister and your mom. You seriously have the tinniest little baby bump for 27 weeks…so stinking cute! She must be folded up in there. So glad you’re feeling well. Those chocolate chip cookies are calling to me, they look so fresh and yummy!

  13. Love stories like that!!!! I had a student a few years ago who was born at 26 weeks. We always do a project in the last few weeks of school (to keep the kids busy 😉 ) where they write their birth stories (complete with pictures of them as babies – so cute!) and they read/present them to the class. When little Matthew went up to share his, by the end of it, I was BAWLING. All of my kids wanted to know why I was crying, and all I could tell them was that it was a miracle that their classmate was standing up there today reading to them because of how early he had been born!

  14. You are the cutest pregnant lady ever!!! Love it!

  15. you’re sooo cute! love your outfits!
and we have two older sisters who we love and adore hanging out with.
good eats lately we must say is our plantains with tahini 😉

  16. Ah ha ha ha ha! You have a cauliflower in your tummy! 😉

  17. Bethany says:

You look FABULOUS!! I can’t believe how adorable and tiny you are! Kudos to you for staying sofit! Just a word of caution though, do you Remember Denise from the dance team? With her last pregnancy her baby wasn’t gaining weight in the third trimester so her doctors put her on bed rest, and the minute she started bed rest her baby gained two whole pounds in a week! She was exercising every day for an hour, and while she felt like she was never over doing it, the doctors wanted her to back off so baby could gain weight. Everyone’s different obviously, but still a story worth remembering. Love you, girl!

  1. […] finally, Happy Birthday to my youngest sister, Elisa!! She is 14, and is our miracle sister. She is the one who was born at 27 weeks & weighed less than 2 lbs at birth(!). Now she is a super fun & feisty teenager! Love you, girl. […]
