Relaxing Mechanisms

Hey friends!

Yay-so glad a bunch of you appreciated the info on things to consider when becoming a fitness instructor. I am so glad I could help and/or maybe spark some excitement in those of you who were (and are now!) considering it. It’s a great job to have! :)

So changing gears…..we’ve talked a bit about stress & how it can be a major issue in our lives…… (read more from ‘the period’ journey here)

Ummmm, did you know you can’t ever get ‘rid’ of stress?

Bummer, right?

There are actually good stressors & bad stressors, & we need to be stressed in various ways to achieve results. BUT, if we let the bad stress get to us more than it should, well, that’s when it’s time to RELAX.

I think our world (and the US in particular) is way too stressed out. I mean people are literally running around with a to-do list a mile long, plus the other millions of responsibilities adults have…..

We live in a perfect world set up for disaster. Why? Because most of us “are stressed out” 99% of the time. (Ask anyone. Promise most of them will agree to that.)

How is that even possible?! We’re supposed to be sleeping for more than 1% of the time, right? (right.)



What we each need to have is our own personal relaxing mechanisms so we can combat some of those stressors!

Or in other words, we need an arsenal of things we can do to calm us down so the stressors that come our way don’t “stress us out” for so much of our time.

We can’t get rid of the stress completely, no, but we can HANDLE ’em better.

And we handle it better by creating a lifestyle that is more calming & relaxing.

My relaxing mechanisms:

  • reading a good book or novel
  • praying
  • crying
  • talking to my husband
  • napping
  • reading my scriptures
  • stretching or foam rolling
  • massage
  • using essential oils in various ways
  • taking walks outside
  • sometimes plain just going to bed!
  • going to the temple
  • watching a movie–especially funny ones
  • drinking herbal tea
  • talking to my mom or sisters
  • painting my toenails

I have a long list! And it’s because I’ve found what works for me–and different things work at different times. I seriously need those moments/minutes/hours to relax each week. I MUST have that time or else I will go crazy with everything that I’ve got going on!

And my life honestly isn’t that busy.


Thankful Thursday

  1. I am grateful for a mother who loves unconditionally, and who is so inviting. She is an inspiring woman!
  2. I am thankful for my hands–it’s amazing how much they can do!
  3. I am really grateful for sunlight. I NEED it in a bad way.

  1. I just get stressed when I do have SO MUCH going on and not enough “me” time. But thankfully, that doesn’t happen too often, and while I am busy, I still feel like I have “me” time, time for Jonny, and time for work/friends/home/etc. I’m thankful for this snow day that St. Louis schools will be enjoying today… hehe

  2. Grad school is definitely a big stressor for me! My relaxing mechanisms are: long talks with my boyfriend, my mom or my best friend, a walk, listening to music, mindless TV/movie, reading a good book or magazine, and baking.

  3. what time is the twitter chat? Ill try to join in! I get stressed when I work A ton and dont have the MOney that I want or need! Doesnt everyone feel that way though….ugh :( I just have to leave it in God’s hands

Most of my stress usually comes from feeling overwhelmed (i.e. a super long to do list or taking on something that I don’t know how it’ll all work out) or fear of the unknown and all the what ifs that go along with it. Thankfully, I’ve gotten MUCH better over the past couple years thanks to God and my husband, but it’s still something I continually have to work on. My favorite ways to relax are massage, reading, chatting with my husband or close friend, watching a TV show, and/or reading.

  5. Great tips for relaxation! I get VERY stressed easily, I think it’s just because I’m a naturally anxious person so I try to eliminate that by exercising, meditating, reading, walking, sleeping, writing, or talking to my Mom or friends (that always helps).

    Those are awesome tips – thanks for sharing! By the way, what type of foam roller do you recommend? I am moving from strength-training-winter-hibernation to a lot more outside cardio and my muscles are super tight all the time. I was looking online, but saw a ton of different sizes and thickness listed, and I really wasn’t sure where to start.

    • that actual type of foam roller…. I have no idea! hah. I like the longer lengths though & the thicker ones. My husband bought it for me off amazon- it’s pink. The longest one is about 36 inches long & that’s the length I have. & they’re usually 6 inches across I think?

      I like the longer ones b/c I can do more with them, I feel. :) Hope that helps!

  7. When I’m feeling particularly overwhelmed at times, I try to remember it’s just a challenge making me stronger. When it becomes too much? Napping is a nice, refreshing time. :)

  8. My therapist also said something similar in regards to my anxiety- we can’t get rid of it, but we wouldn’t want to. We need a little anxiety (and in this case stress) in our lives to function.

    I have a couple of anxiety techniques that are great for stress and anxiety- doing breathing techniques or listening to soothing music. Although I’ll admit I very rarely do them any more. I love reading a book nowadays and it’s really helped me take time out. Even watching mindless tv and not being on the computer or phone can be relaxing for me sometimes as I turn into a vegetable in some ways haha.
