Bodyweight Training

Hey, hey!

My week has already kicked off to a nice start, and I hope yours has as well. :)

Yesterday (Monday) was super productive-check me out :

grit/bodypump/cxworx -bodyweight training

  • worked
  • went to the library after work
  • made some phone calls
  • read a bit & watched a movie in the evening
  • ate/cooked pretty much all day 😉

p.s. when your day starts off 4 hours earlier than it normally would, it’s very amazing what you can stuff into that day!

Bodyweight Training

You know how I like to encourage us all to get fitter, right?

{What is she talking about?! HAHAHHA}

Well, in case you didn’t notice, there really is NO excuse anymore because bodyweight (or body weight) exercise is the ‘new’ way to get fit this year. I’ve mentioned that before, but I wanted to reiterate that fact: YOU can get in a great workout with just your body.

BOOM.

In our GRIT sessions, we actually use a lot of bodyweight training, and this delivers maximum results. The people in my session have noticed huge differences in their waist size, ability to lift a certain weight, and the length of time they can hold a hover. It’s obviously the work they’ve put in, but the mode of exercise is a crucial part to the results.

If you have a crappy mode (or an exercise that is dangerous), you won’t get the results you want.

Bodyweight training is also nice because there isn’t the need to grab equipment (you can use stuff like a bench/chair/step though), there is a reduction in injury issues (less heavy weight, less injury), and the exercises can be done in pretty much any space.

In a greatist article I read, it makes the case to start bodyweight training today. I really liked some of the points, so I thought I’d share!

Here are a few points the article makes:

2. Combined cardio and strength training. Pressed for time but need to hit cardio and strength in one quick workout? Performing quick bodyweight cardio sessions (such as one minute of burpees or a set of jumping jacks) in between strength exercises will keep the heart pumping while still encouraging muscle and strength development[2].

3. Fast fat-burning. Looking to shed a few unwanted pounds? Just a few minutes of a bodyweight circuit training can have a major impact on the body’s metabolism[3]. Don’t believe it? Try adding a few quick sets of these amped-up burpees into any workout routine and see what happens!

5. Improved core strength. The “core” is more than just abs. In fact, at least twenty-nine musclesmake up the human core, and many simple bodyweight movements can be used to engage all of them. Such exercises improve core strength for better posture and improved athletic performance[4].”

Although all are so true, I can definitely attest to #5 (!!)–my core has never been stronger since I’ve really focused on doing pushups correctly, working on my plank & hover form (thank you CXWORX), and bracing my abs when I do any kind of bodyweight squat or lunge.

  1. I’m obsessed with bodyweight training. Probably 75% of my strength routines are done using bodyweight exercises. I love the plank the best!

  3. I don’t do a ton of bodyweight stuff, but you can never go wrong with pushups or a good plank.

    And happy engage-aversary! I’m pretty sure you guys celebrate everything and it’s the cutest thing in existence. :-p

  4. I’m currently working on improving my push-ups, after watching Blonde Ponytail talk about correct form. I guess I was doing it wrong! Anyways, I’m starting over and building my strength for push-ups the right way!

  5. Bodyweight exercises are so underrated sometimes! Some of my favorites are planks, push ups, and squats. I also love plyo exercises – they always kick my booty in the best way! 😉

  6. Huge, huge fan of bodyweight training. I started doing it more thanks to Jillian Michaels about a year ago now, and it’s definitely given me the best results I’ve ever gotten. More than cardio alone or doing machines at the gym, that’s for sure! Plus, doing pushups makes me feel like a badass haha

    I always tell myself that I need to pick it back up, but with the amount of running I do, I never have time.

  8. I had a very productive Monday! Fit test push up challenge weight lifting grocery store laundry cooked a ton… think that about covers it all! PS crossfit really challenges my core!

    What a magnifico Monday you had there!!! Mine was madness as usual, early gym training and long day at work, but the evening was a delightful surprise. My best gal took me out for a belated bday dinner and it was ohhhhh-sooooo amazingly delish, wish I had leftovers, ha! I inhaled all of my swordfish and even had hers – she claimed it was not seasoned enough, but it was totally perfect to me and tasted even better off her plate. LOL
    I love your bodyweight training post – this is perfect timing, as always! I’m going to look at your links and take some notes fo sho. I need a different flavor on days when I’m just not in the mood to go to my gym but still wanna get a good workout. I think you’ve solved my dilemma and then some, thank ya!!! hugs hugs hugs xoxox

    Body Weight training is awesome, and is the shiz- people underestimate it and think it’s an ‘easy’ workout. Nu uh.

    Oh and CX rocks- my core has never been stronger and my lower back issues have immensely improved!

  13. Wow, you really were productive! I should have been doing body weight exercises while I’ve been moving and not able to go to they gym the last couple of week. Bad me! The basic pushup and it’s variants is still my favorite. A tight upper body and back always makes me feel bad-ass. 😀
