Improve & Burn

Hey, hey!

We got dumped on with snow yesterday.

Kind of hard to tell since I was a little late to the picture taking party yesterday–and by then, a lot of it had already melted.

But you still get the gist. It snowed a lot.

Ice. Inversion. Rain. Snow. In UT, we’ve got it all, so take your pick!

And finally the sun came out yesterday-happy day. :)

I’m not one to talk about the weather a ton (I find it annoying, redundant, and well, kind of negative), but this, this was epic. And HAD to be talked about.all.the.time. We shall see what we get next! Maybe hot, sunny days?! :)

Some news: I filmed my CXWORX video yesterday & got my GRIT video back from the girl that helped me video it (she was out of town). I am stuck–both are pretty good, but I know I could do better….

I should probably video them both again, huh?

If I do, then GRIT videoing will be tomorrow & CX next Monday.

Not gonna lie, this step in the Les Mills’ Fitness Instructor process is not the most fun. And I really do not love watching myself on video. And if I say “come on team” one more time……I might burst a blood vessel.

But I guess there’s no better feedback than video right?!

Improve & Burn

1. You all know I love teaching Zumba (I need my booty-shaking time every week at least once), so I found 5 ways to burn more fat in Zumba. Here’s 1 of the 5:

1. Let Loose
Zumba is all about having fun, and joining the party, which is hard to do if you’re stiff or self-conscious! The best way to burn more calories in class is to let go, have fun, and try not to think too much. “Letting yourself go will let the calories go!” Boyer says.

And amen. I remember in my 2nd or 3rd Zumba class ever, I stopped caring about what I looked like….and I ended up having so much more fun (and I know I burned more)!

Just forget about what you look like & dance! <–this is, admittedly, so much easier when the teacher makes it simple to follow her

2. Everyone is always looking for great ways to burn a bit more in their abs. Am I right?

Here are a few ways to improve your abs workouts (easy ways).

And 1 of the 10:

Instead Of: Pilates Leg Extensions
Try: Swiss-Ball Leg Lifts
Pilates is great for sculpting strong, flat abs, and this move boosts your burn even more with the added resistance of a Swiss ball. Shorter movements with your legs closer to the ground are sure to have your abs shaking within a few reps.

3. Lastly, if you’re looking for more results, read intensity in fitness training by moi. 😉

Simple changes can be so effective in fitness training.

The key is not the absolute weight lifted or speed ran, it is rather the overload of the exercise, relative to each of us, that produces the result. And therein lies the secret! You shouldn’t be training like everyone else to get your results, you simply must vary the intensity of YOUR workouts to get the results YOU’RE after.

With varying levels of intensity (depending on where you are at fitness-wise) what needs to happen is muscle fatigue in weight training, aerobic systems pushed a little more in cardio workouts, and a change of pace in any exercise.

There is a difference between a good burn from a workout & pains in a workout–learn the difference & you could avoid many overuse injuries. Plus, you might end up enjoying your workouts even more!

Well, I am off to teach some early PUMP & then work, work, work. It’s been super busy at work lately, so I need to be super efficient today.

  2. Lately, I’ve been trying to focus more on tightening my core when lifting – get a free ab workout while working other parts of my body! But nonetheless, definitely going to check out that ab article (and yours on intensity, of course!)

  4. I’ve switched my focus to really focus my on correcting muscle imbalances and focusing on my form on the major lifts (squat, dead lift, bench, and instead of OH press – chin ups) It’s going well so far!
    I don’t think I even know what inversion is!

  5. The weather always impacts my mood, so it’s something I find myself talking about regularly. I don’t think it’s necessarily negative… a pretty snow storm or a warm sunny day can be positive! :) Focusing on form when doing strength training can definitely affect your burn and what you get out of it! And like you said, in cardio workouts, I think “letting loose” and giving it your all certainly impacts that burn too.

    • that’s a really good point about the weather(!!), but I must say, it is usually negative on social media sites (from my perspective), so that’s why I said that. But I agree with you, there are some lovely moments that we should celebrate & talk about. And hence why this is so funny….because I was talking about how bad the weather’s been. HAh 😉

  6. I’d say if you’re tht unsure, a second filming wouldn’t hurt… But also, look objectively at just the compulsory stuff? It’s always going to be uncomfortable to watch, so make sure that’s not why you think you need to refilm. I’m sure did a great job!

    So, how many times did you say brace your core? 😉

    • I was pretty good on compulsories, but I am going to go through it fully this week. I will refilm GRIT tomorrow & see which one I like more. It’s not that big of a deal, it’s just sort of annoying, but I feel like I could do better. We shall see…

      I say pull belly in and brace abs, or abs braces a bazillion times. But they need to hear it! hah 😉

  7. Good tips. I love Zumba. I am often sore the next day due to using my muscles in a different way even if the class feels easier than some of my HIIT or bootccamp workouts.

    bingo bam, right on! great post as always, and your timing couldn’t get better if i planned it myself 😀 i’ve been adding a bit more weight to my strength session, but combining that with the cardio stuff and proper stretching and has been feeling good. most of all stretching and doing my muscle strengthening exercises for my weak ones, like my calves and my hips. i always get injured there so i have to make sure i do exercises, and that is easy to forget! also, if i am sore a swim or just a nice long, slow walk (if the weather is nice!) is sooo lovely and helpful, in fact the tighter i am the more a walk or some light swimming helps. i’m tempted to just curl up in bed, but now i know i’ll feel better after some hot yoga, swimming, or walking to get those tight things loosened up. oh the joys of our bodies!
    PS loving my Bic Band, omg I really really love it!!!! so cute and fun, really makes me smile. thanks again for the great tips girlie! xoxxo

  9. I need to go to one of your Zumba classes! I’ve never tried it before. It looks fun though!

    I always feel like I’m getting more out of my workout and feel the burn more when I focus on my form. I also love to switch up my workouts so my body is being challenged!

  10. To feel the burn more I completely let go of everything else happening and truly get involved with the workout (ha!). For that given amount of time it’s all about the workout and not everything else that’s going on. I also talk..a lot. I tell ya it adds a whole new dimension to working out!

  11. I hate seeing myself on video. Ugh. But I bet your videos are great! Although, extra practice never hurts. :)
