BodyPUMP Release 82 Review + Weekend Recap

Good morning!

It was SUCH a good weekend. So good. I even got lucky and squeezed sleeping-in on Sunday into the busyness of it all, so it totally rocked!

Highlights included:

BodyPUMP launch (more to come).

{Me and another instructor presented 82 together in red, white, and blue. SO fun!!}

It rocked. We had a blast with it, and I woke up crazy sore on Sunday. Woot!

Blogger Brunch. Organized by the amazing Janetha!

I ate amazing food, and met some AWEsome bloggers.

Janetha, Ashley, Janae, Candice, Emily and Joanna are just a few of the amazing people I met! They are all way chill, gorgeous, down to earth, and hilarious. Plus, these ladies can bake, cook, and run a bagillion miles.

No wonder they all are so happy and friendly! (I secretly think people are more outgoing and generally happier if they take care of their health.)

Can’t wait to meet up with more SLC bloggers again soon. (We missed you, Ashley!) :)

I ate my body weight in watermelon there. And I could’ve gone for more–that stuff was GOOD.

{We had 3 cheese tortellini, salad, and ciabatta bread. It tasted SO good.}

As you can see, it was a fantastic weekend!

Let’s back up to Friday night.

I holed myself up in our apartment, ate ice cream, and crammed to finish learning the choreo for BodyPump 82.

{I had to test out the cookies I was going to bring, after all! And who doesn’t practice for a fitness class by eating ice cream?! :)}

After a good night’s rest, it was GO time Saturday at 7:00 a.m.

I did speed work for 4 sweaty miles in 33 minutes, and then headed into the room to set up.

I was too wired to eat anything before teaching, but I had 1/4 a blueberry bagel with cream cheese + strawberries afterwards (with my chocolate milk + protein powder, of course!)

I set up my bench and plates, got my mic on, and got ready to bust a move.

BodyPUMP Release 82 Review

I really liked 3/4 of this release, especially some of the new innovations, and a few of the music tracks. It was a hard workout, and I was a sweatyyyyyy, tired mess by the end.

To understand just what BodyPUMP is, read this quick overview about BodyPUMP. I am obsessed with teaching it, and have gotten so much stronger from constituently teaching it, and adding weight to my bar.

Track 1 – Warmup. Song: “Raining Diamonds” The lightest weight of the class on the bar for this track, so the body gets used to lifting a bit of weight. This also allows the body to warm up and prepares the body for hard work to come, and reduces the risk of injury. This song rocks! I listened to it on repeat like a million times. It has a lot of quick transitions, which are hard for people to catch on to, but it does keep it interesting. My weight selection: 25 lbs. <—weight listed does not include weight of the bar (1-2 lbs.)

Track 2 – Squats. Song: “Someone Like You” Heaviest weight of the class goes on the bar for the quads and glutes, as these larger muscle groups comprise the legs and butt. This squats track is awesome because it involves a lot of bottom-half squats, and holding the squats down type movement. It has a great feel to it-and I LOVED how they amped up the techno to this song from Adele. It really is a keeper!  This track has 4 sets, and at the final one, my legs were pretty much shot! My weight selection: 55 lbs.

Track 3 – Chest. Song: “I Like How It Feels” This track seriously hurts. SO good. It is probably one of my favorite tracks of the entire release, actually. I like the song, and I liked what they did with it. We did 3 long sets with the bar- chest press -with no recovery, and then we did 1-handed plate pushups and ‘normal’ pushups. OUCH! The distribution of weight challenges the chest in a whole new way…and I like it! My weight selection: 40 lbs.

Track 4 – Back. Song: “Bring Me To Life-Hands Up Mix” This track is crazy good. There are 2 really long sets that include 16 clean and presses and a bunch of triple bent-over deadrows. It is a great track that has a lot of slower movements and quick, powerful moves to bring in the strength and intensity. I have since added weight for the back track, and I am so glad I did. My back was on FIRE by the end of the final set! My weight selection: 45 lbs.

Track 5 – Triceps. Song: “Bad Case of Loving You” This track is has a lot of great moves, but I don’t really love the song (Sorry, Les Mills). The track involves triceps dips, seated triceps extensions (wahoo!),triceps kickbacks, and triceps pushups. WOWZERS. The music has an upbeat feel to it, but I just don’t connect with it unfortunately. Despite the music, I do love all the moves as it got my arms burning. I freakin’ love triceps pushups. Weird-o. My weight selection: 10 lbs. for dips, 5 lbs. for kickbacks., 15 lbs. for triceps extensions.

Track 6 – Biceps. Song: “Bottoms Up” I do not like the music that much, but it is a hardcore song–so the intensity works with the moves.  The recovery wasn’t much, so like before, this one had my arms on FIRE! The track involves a lot of biceps curls….a LOT. My weight selection: 25 lbs.

Track 7 – Lunges. Song: “Ecuador” A fantastic lunge track! I really like this one! The song starts with several rounds of squats (woot!) with the barbell, moves to lunges with the barbell, and then we hit body squats, jumping squats, and body weight lunges. OUCH!! The bottome-half lunges were tough, but I could feel my butt taking a new shape. ;) This track brought some great innovations, totally killing off my lower body at the end. Once again, pushing the limits feels AMAZING! :) My weight selection (for the squats/barbell lunges): 45 lbs.

Track 8 – Shoulders. Song: “Be Cool 2012” This track has a bunch of things going on, and I actually kinda like the song. I love how it starts with a bunch of pushups, moves to reverse deltoid raises with plates, and then goes to standing work; think rotator raises and pec dec presses. I love those moves! It ends with a barbell overhead press and a push press.  This track has those pushups at the beginning, and I did ‘em all on my toes, so I felt totally hardcore. :) My weight selection: 25 lbs. on the bar, 5 lbs. plates

Track 9 – Abdominals. Song: “Feel So Close” This ab track doesn’t have much new stuff, but it’s still challenging. It has a bunch of slow crunches (good because it forces us to think about engaging more muscles), twisting bicycle crunches, a plank hold, and mountain climbers (but twisting knee to opposite elbow). Hard stuff. Honestly, I could’ve kept going with this one, but it was a fun song. My weight selection: none.

Track 10 – Cooldown. Song: “Time To Say Goodbye” I like opera, so this song was a nice way to relax and stretch. I love that time to release the tired muscles, and congratulate the hardcore members. The song is slightly cheesy, but no one cares because they’re all so tired. Hehe. No weight selection here.

Ahhh that was a FUN morning. Fun = sweaty, tough workout to me! Besides, I was able to add some weight to my bar, and it felt awesome to know I’ve gotten stronger.

That morning was GREAT! I can’t wait to teach it again today. :) I’ll be teaching it by myself (of course), so I better have it all memorized by then….

    sounds like your weekend was the bomb! How I wish I could go to your bodypump classes. My weekend involved organizing and unpacking- moving is a big job! Oh and picking up furniture from sketch people on cragistlist. (What I do for cheap furniture!)

  4. girl, this seriously looks like the perfect weekend to me!!! fun exercise with workout friends, a blogger meet up, and good food – can’t beat that! i’m so sad i missed the potluck! we were camping and then family came into town saturday afternoon, so it was kind of a hectic day. next time for sure though! :)

    The Bodypump class looks dynomite, and your 4 mile/33 minute run was super sweet!!!! What a rad way to start off a great day. Love it!
    New fitness classes can be intimidating but fun if you keep positive. I’ve had both good and bad experiences. Good was when I first tried a class called STRIKE! Hillary made us all comfortable and honestly having a great teacher is all that matters. You seem like you fit that bill to the letter! The bad experience was when I tried a barbell class at my gym; the instructor just didn’t seem into it at all, and the whole class fed off that low energy. We were all tired an unmotivated, and I left without even breaking a sweat. Bummer!
    I had a great weekend with the tri club, a bit of running on Saturday with lots of lake swimming right before the thunderstorm rolled in, whoohoo! Tried to cycle yesterday but go rained out, so ended up doing some indoor gym stuff. No worries, I was ready for a break, lol

      I totally am bugged when instructors don’t care about their job OR class. I’m like, “Hello?! This is the BEST job ever! Act like it!” haha

    I liked most of 82… I LOVE Raining Diamonds, such a good song! I’m a bit over Adele, so I didn’t love the song for squats (especially because my brain was doing Flow choreo from the last release there). The chest track was ridiculous with those push ups. LOVED the back track. I liked the tricep song and the track was killer. I’m not a huge fan of the jump squats in the lunge track. The shoulder track… INTENSE. The song just made me laugh though (parts sound SO inappropriate – would you do me a favor and take me on to the next level? I like it deep.). :) Can’t say I remember biceps or abs much.

      The shoulder track song made my husband go “ummm what is that you’re listening to?” HAHAHA.

  9. Your weekend sounds like it was a great one. My weekend was all about family – breakfast with family on Saturday morning, a family reunion on Saturday afternoon, and church with my family on Sunday.

    BodyPump 82 is fun!! I, too, love the lunges, warm-up, and clean & press! My chest is recovering from the press….aye carumba!

    I saw “Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter” and “Ted” this weekend along with hanging out with my boyfriend lots and baking some pecan cinnamon buns and visiting my parents.

  15. We had body pump 82 launched about a month ago now (in Aus)- I love it also! The chest track is such a killer but I found the squat track slightly easier this time round so I’ve upped my weights accordingly. I love the lunge song also! Really good release! Body step 88 is also awesome! (apart from that darn party step)

  16. I’m so behind… reading your last few posts (I feel like I’ve been behind for months!). Did I miss something? When you moved- did you move to SLC? So cool that you hung out with my buddy Janetha!! Love you both!
    And as always- I love seeing your review of the new Bodypump release. I LOVE this one- I think it’s my favorite ever. My favorite track is chest… the lunges… but I really like them all. And I’m totally with you on the music. We do our launch tomorrow!
