Working Out Sucks Giveaway!

Hey friends. And HAPPY Friday to us!!

It is a momentous day around here and one to be celebrate….. Anyone guess what that is??

Okay fine. It is the ONE year mark since I started this little ole’ blog. Awwwww.

I wrote two posts that day, and neither of them are particularly awesome (as a new-time blogger I had no idea what to write). Hah. But that’s okay, we live and we learn, right? RIGHT.

And now, as a FitFluential Ambassador, I was chosen by Anytime Fitness to get my own copy of the book “Working Out Sucks: And Why It Doesn’t Have To” AND another copy to give AWAY to a reader!

The book was written by Anytime Fitness CEO Chuck Runyon, and is written in his take-no-crap way. I love how his approach is very simple: sell the benefits of working out because it is WAY better than living a life without working out. Love that.

Although I love working out and have found my niche (I don’t dread the gym, I love it there!), the book gave me some great ideas for inspiring others to get fit and join the fun of fitness.

Here are some of my thoughts on the book:

  • The book’s name is called working out sucks, but don’t be fooled. The entire book makes the case that yes, working out may not be fun, but there are worse things for us if we DON’T work out.
  • It’s written as a no-bull approach to getting people to work out and boy is it motivating!
  • It is written clearly and without tons of science jargon–so ANY one, and I mean anyone, can understand why working out is the better option, even if it may not be fun or the best thing to do in the world.
  • I am a fitness instructor and I LOVE working out. I just do. So I was worried the book would be boring or have stuff in there I already knew. Boring, NO. Most of the stuff I know, but there are some new, fun facts I did not know, and some ideas of behavior change that ANYone can use for any thing in their lives. VERY cool stuff.
  • Here is a short excerpt to give you an idea of what it’s like: “What’s more expensive; a heart attack or a gym membership?” (p.101)
  • There are chapters on behavior change, nutrition, weight management, and success stories of people who decided that living the life they lived sucked more than working out…..and changed their lives by working out! SO inspiring.
  • And some science on behavior change from the book: “The brain is a physical organ and the source of your negative thinking and sabotaging behavior……but, your mind is different. It’s a psychological organ….[it] can believe, hope, make decisions…..[and] it’s the primary vehicle to overwriting your negative thinking.” (p.90) Powerful stuff!

{pretend I was holding the book to show you I read it….okay? One minor detail.}

I like workout videos! They seem to motivate me more than if I had a sheet of paper telling me to do X squats and Y leg presses. The time goes by faster, it seems.

    Also, music also helps!

  2. I try to find a friend that will workout with me (normally at home) so that working out won’t suck. Last summer I found a running partner and this year I’m going to focus on getting in shape by way of horseback. I’ve seen some new books and videos about Yoga and other exercises you can do while riding, so I want to check those out. If I’m on the back of my horse I doubt working out would be near as hard. :)

  7. I make working out suck less by choosing exercises I love. For example, I don’t like kick boxing classes but I love spin. So going to a spin class is a treat for me, not a burden!

  8. I try to see exercise as my thinking-meditating time. When I focus on holistic well-being instead of just physical strength, it empowers me!

  9. I make working out suck less by doing things that I LOVE…I wont force myself to do anything that I hate, otherwise I would never stick to it :)

To make working out suck less I try to work out with a friend. I also like to work out to some good music. I also try and think of how good it makes me feel and how good I will look in those new pair of jeans and that cute top :)

To make working out suck less….honestly, I changed my mindset. Instead of working out being something I HAVE to do, I look at it as something I GET to do. For 60 minutes (or however long), I get to do whatever I want. There are no deadlines, demands, stress, nothing. Just ME and the road, bike, weight bench, etc. All I have to do is put one foot in front of the other.

Also, I’m a runner so running for me is my prayer time, my “tell off my boss in my head” time, and my “award-winning novelist press conference speech” time. Or it’s jamming to my embarassing playlist like Selena Gomez and ol’ school JLo.

Hi Annette! I just found your blog from facebook and I am so excited to read more! I am working on getting fit after my pregnancy so I need motivation and ideas! Thank you for all your awesome posts :) My answer for your quesiton is working out sucks less when I push through and know how great exercise makes me feel (physically & mentally!)

  23. i put on some killer music and zone out – slit the eyes and make everything blurry. Sometimes i use things that make me angry to push it to the max, then do a few more or sometimes jump rope or run until I want to puke then sprint to finish them off – I’ve only dry heaved no vomit lol. That’s an intense workout that sucks less, for me.

  24. I have a special playlist that I only get to listen to when I do long runs – that way I look forward to it!

  28. Oh! And, I don’t think working out sucks (most of the time), but I would love to read the book and then pass it on to my mom who uses every excuse in the book not to live a healthier life. I worry about her and think this would really help open her eyes.

I make working out suck less by varying my routine and trying new things. I try to mix in different things. I just finished a 6 week boot camp, which I had a blast doing and now I am thinking about doing a kettlebell class. I do a Les Mills BodyCombat class every now and then as well, which is just fun and stress relieving at the same time!

I have posted this to my Twitter and Facebook accounts.

  30. I make working out suck less, by running with friends, signing up for races to keep my motivation up and of course MUSIC.

  33. I try new classes!

  34. I love working out, so for me making it suck less is my teaching. I motivate myself and others at the same time!

  35. I make it a challenge. I pick a workout or circuits, keep track of my time and try to beat my time from last time! I write it on the chalkboard when I set a new record!

  36. Something that always makes working out fun is going to group fitness classes. I love the energy that is there and how it motivates me to push harder.

  37. Alicia Baer says:

I joined our local AF while they were still doing the build out., 4 years ago. I love the place. It took me a month to work up the courage to try a cycling class. Now I’m hooked. I do every class I can get to. I love bike riding so this was a perfect fit for me. Definitely makes working out suck less.
