BodyPUMP Release 80 Review

What an awesome weekend that was for me. I feel so grateful for all I have in my life!

The voting did end–but the verdict is still out–wish I knew exactly what it is! But THANK you for all your votes! No matter what the outcome, you guys are the best!


SO, on Saturday I officially took over the busiest BodyPUMP class at the gym and debuted the brand-new release 80. It was definitely a morning where my excitement and nerve levels were HIGH!

The class was full of energy, and everyone was excited to see the new moves, feel the music, and completely fatigue their muscles. And fatigue we did! WOW. Release 80 is no joke! Somehow each release gets harder and harder, and it pushes each person to take his/her fitness level to a new max.

BodyPUMP at a Glance

Les Mills BodyPUMP is the original barbell class that strengthens and tones the entire body (source). Les Mills releases a new release 4 times each year, so this was the first of 2012. This also marks 20 YEARS since BodyPUMP started! Wow. This is a fitness class that has only gotten better with age, and is still topping the charts of people’s favorite way to strength train.

I thought about it while driving home on Saturday: I am totally and completely addicted to BodyPUMP–and I think it’s because I love to dance, I like music, I like strength training, and I love knowing what to do in an organized way. Pretty sure I just described BodyPUMP right there…..except maybe the dancing part 😉

Anyways, after the release is launched (like it was on Saturday) the release is taught in its entirety for 3 straight weeks (allowing people to get the moves down, start to get used to it, and maybe even add weight to some tracks), and then once those 3 weeks are up, the teacher can then mix and match tracks from previous releases, giving the participants a brand “new” workout every single class!

And THAT is why BodyPUMP will change the shape, look, and feel of your body! And this release is NO different. Quite the truth actually: this release takes fitness to a WHOLE new level. My legs, and arms are still on fire from Saturday!

Might be a problem since I teach again in a couple of hours….. 😉

BodyPUMP Release 80 Review

Track 1 – Warmup. Song: “Resuscitate Me” Lightest weight of the class on the bar for this one, just so the body gets used to lifting a bit of weight. This also allows the body to warm up and prepares the body for hard work to come, and reduces the risk of injury. This track has a fun, get-ready-to-work feel to it- and makes me want to work hard for the rest of the class. My weight selection: 25 lbs. <—weight listed does not include weight of the bar (1-2 lbs.)

Track 2 – Squats. Song: “On The Edge Of Glory” Heaviest weight of the class goes on the bar for the legs because the legs are one of the largest muscle groups in the body. This squats track is really awesome because it involves a lot of 1-1 timing, which lifts the heart rate (increasing the rate of calories burned), and involves some super slow action to increase pressure in the working muscles. This track has 3 long sets, so this track is no place to hold back anything! It’s long overall (almost 6 minutes!), but I love squats–so I am in heaven on this one 😉  My weight selection: 55 lbs.

Track 3 – Chest. Song: “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Probably my least-favorite track of the entire release because the song is not my favorite (I don’t love heavy metal, gritty songs). The work is obviously hard as there are only 3 long sets of chest press with only 1 recovery, but this track/song, sadly, just does not ‘do it’ for me. My weight selection: 30 lbs.

Track 4 – Back. Song: “The Tide” This track is a good one because the song’s uplifting and the moves are HARD. My favorite move (the Clean and Press) is in there –actually, as the Power Press, and it got my legs and back working. Felt so good! The triple wide rows that are thrown in at the end make me want to barf (for real), but I kinda like that “I’m going to die” feeling. Weird, I know. My weight selection: 40 lbs.

Track 5 – Triceps. Song: “Till The World Ends” This track is a great one because it involves three VERY different moves to work every part of the two triceps muscles (per arm). The track involves triceps extensions (wahoo!), triceps presses, tons of triceps pushups and some more triceps extensions. I thought my arms were going to fall off by the end, but of course they didn’t. You know what else helps?? : I love dancing/working out to Britney. So sue me. My weight selection: 30 lbs. for the 1st two sets (on the bar) & 15 lbs for standing triceps extensions.

Track 6 – Biceps. Song: “Eye Of The Tiger” This one is slightly cheesy, but because the song is such a well-known song, it works. There are NO recoveries, so like before, this one had my arms on FIRE! The track involves a lot of biceps curls….a LOT. And my favorites: bottom-halves! The varying tempos allow for good work to happen, strong, lean muscles to be built, and for some extra getting your grrrrr on. I felt like a tiger by the end, let’s be honest. My weight selection: 25 lbs.

Track 7 – Lunges. Song: “Fading Like A Flower” Holy CRAZY. There are no words to describe this one. Such a deceiving lunge track, really. The song is over 5 minutes long and it starts with 2 rounds of squats (ouch!) with the barbell, then lots of lunges using different tempos -and without holding any weight. Because of the chance to use only body weight for these lunges, it brings a whole new meaning to fit. Especially when you have to jump out of the lunge, propelling your body and knee up and forward! MAJOR killer track. Love it! My weight selection (for the squats): 45 lbs.

Track 8 – Shoulders. Song: “Hands Up!” This track is insane. Literally. By the final few overhead presses, I physically could not move my bar up! That’s how hard I worked, and how intense this track is.  It features a new move : the rotator overhead press, and boy did that one HURT (good).  This track has tons of pushups –which makes it SO freakin’ intense , and really hardcore. This was probably one of my favorites because it was so hard. Someone please tell me : why am I so weird?! My weight selection: 30 lbs. on the bar, 5 lbs. plates

Track 9 – Abdominals. Song: “Rolling In The Deep” This ab track is loooonnnggg and really fun! It has a bunch of slow crunches (good because it forces us to think about it, engaging more muscles!), bicycle crunches, plank holds, forward & back rocking planks, and side plank holds with options. Really HARD. Let’s just say my entire midsection was shot by the end of this track!  My weight selection: none.

Track 10 – Cooldown. Song: “Fade Into Me” A fantastic track because we get to completely stretch all those muscles we just worked. I love this time to just congratulate the wonderful gym goers, and talk about how hard we all worked. Nothing like a room full of sweaty, tired bodies to feel so bonded! No weight selection here.

My Reactions to Release 80

This is a great release with (mostly) awesome music, challenging moves, and some really intense add-ins. This release will make ANYone re-think how fit she/he is. Hah. And I was totally sweaty starting with the squats track-and did not stop dripping until the room was cleared. Nasty. But I was pushing my limits out there, so it’s okay.

With this release I totally realized that music can totally change my view of the track–turn me totally on or off toward it. I just can’t help it! I don’t do workouts to Nirvana. I am a Britney, Lady Gaga, uplifting beat, dance-track lifter 😉 So of course this plays in to my dislike toward the chest track (sad because I love chest presses!), and plays to my total love for the squats, triceps, and shoulders tracks in this release.

  6. Sounds like you had such a great time!! I cannot wait to launch 80 in 3 weeks. Soooo excited :). I like the more rock-ish gritty songs :) I love them for teaching cycle too, but I love me some brittney and gaga too, so I don’t descriminate :)

    • I am SO excited for you as well! How fun you’re doing an 80’s theme! We just had a bunch of decorations and the trainers there, it was fantastic!

  8. Wow that sounds like an awesome workout…I so wish my gyms offered body pump! I love listening to up-beat music while I workout. I need things that will keep me motivated and that help push me :)

  9. We are doing the launch on Wednesday. I hope I’m well enough to go and take the class! I’m not teaching 80 yet, because I’m still banished to 79 until I get that magic certificate.
    I’m SCARED of the lunge track if it’s even harder than 79’s!

      The lunge and shoulders tracks are CRAZY. BUt feels SO good. I feel like I already have a new butt after 2 times of 80. Haha!
