Treadmill HIIT Workout #1

Oh hey. Good morning!

Today is Pearl Harbor remembrance day! I am grateful for all those who fought for our freedom-and my heart goes out to those who suffered that day. I am oddly fascinated with WWII facts, people, dates, and events-I remember them all once I find out info about them (p.s. I think war is so sad and appalling and can’t believe people suffered that, but it reminds me of what love and peace can eventually do).

I also really loved the movie “Pearl Harbor,” and consequently I just finished a WWII book last night that was written about Louie Zamperini, an Olympian runner who went to war (air force) and crashed in the Pacific in 1943. It is called “Unbroken” and it is totally mesmerizing, horrific, and inspiring. What the human spirit can endure, suffer, and go through is totally amazing! What a beautifully story of resilience and redemption!

Moving on (can you tell I am a nerd?!)– I’m glad we’re all of the same opinion that protein fat and carbs are the key elements to any eating endeavor. I definitely eat a good amount of protein, carbs, and fats in my meals!

oh hey food.

******

So, yesterday I promised I’d post my workout from that morning. And you’re in for a treat—well a sweaty treat that is.

If you have access to a treadmill (or a Garmin and some hills) you can DO this workout! It is a good one that gets the heart pumping, the sweat pouring, and pushes you out of your comfort zone (but not too far).

The workout is designed for short minutes of faster speeds that are maintainable, combined with some short recoveries on hills (i.e. this is HIIT- High Intensity Interval Training).

Don’t worry, this workout will take your fitness to a whole new level. Plus, it’ll help anyone looking to get speedier. Pretty much it will make you grateful you can run (and survive it! hah)

I had a lot of fun with this workout–breathing hard, sweatin’ buckets, and watchin’ HP #2. It was magical. Truly 😉

{I will be posting a ton of treadmill workouts coming at ya in the coming weeks for these lovely Winter months, so I am beginning here with #1}

get ready to sweat

BAM. And like that you’re done. Who says they don’t have 40 minutes?!

Write this one down, set the clothes out, go for it, and you’ll see your quality of life soar. The benefits of exercise are like magic. Like fairy dust. So if you want in on the action, kick it up a notch and I’ll see you on the other side 😉 –p.s. sure sounds like reader Linz is definitely hitting the gym! How are you all doing on the fitness front? I want to hear it :)

And with that I am off to PUMP some iron. I can’t get enough of lifting weights lately–it feels OH so good!

What kind of HIIT workout are YOU looking for that I can design for ya?? Where do YOU usually run?? Any strength sessions today for YOU??

  1. oooooh can’t wait to try this one! question: is your speed 4 walking or jogging for you? i sometimes have trouble walking at speed 4… not sure if it’s my short legs or what! lol. speed workouts are the only type i can do on the treadmill so i’m excited to try this one!!

    • haha, I guess I didn’t specify. Good question–I am tall so 4.0 is a brisk walk for me, so go down to a speed that is brisk walking (can adjust if too hard). It should be a recovery but not a rest (hence the hills and not too-slow pace). It is a sweaty one :)

  2. Love the pinnable workout – thanks! :)

  3. Such an awesome workout!! I love interval workouts…they feel so much more effective than steady state cardio. If you’re ever looking for some ideas that you don’t have to make up on your own I have some listed under my workouts page!

  4. loving the looks of this treadmill workout! i’m all about the intervals, as I get incredibly bored running at a steady pace on the treadmill. looking forward to seeing more! :)

  5. Wow – that looks intense. It’d be a very high intensity one for me – 8 is pretty quick! Thanks for the workout. Oh, and that Panera meal looks deeeelish. :)

    • YESSS you knew it was Panera. That rocks :)

Oh yes, 8.0 mph is quick, but you might just be able to do it…..Gotta try it out!

I’ve been looking for ways to up my treadmill work out and this looks like it! I will let you know how it goes.

  8. I did an HIIT workout today too! Although I don’t change my incline, I get too annoyed with how long it takes for the treadmill to go up and down!

Hi Annette! I tried this workout last night at the gym and must say that it was great! I do have a quick comment/suggestion though. I realized as I was repeating the sequence that your minutes may be a tad off? Or do you repeat the sequence twice? Anyway, since the treadmill can take up to 20+ seconds to get from say, a 9% incline back down to a 1% incline or vice versa, I ended up taking 2 minutes for each incline walk in between the running intervals. I repeated the sequence twice and it ended up being just at 33 minutes total. I still enjoyed it and it was definitely an effective workout! I loved the mix of running and incline walking! I am always looking for ways to switch it up at the gym, so thanks for a great workout ! :-)
