Garlic Herb Bread

Hey, hey! Did you all have a lovely weekend?

I definitely did. After writing out my weekly workout schedule I thought to myself, boy I am glad I have (usually) restful weekends! This last one had a little bit of extra fun too: we went and saw Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” (awesome!), ate frozen yogurt (delish!), napped, read, and baked (see post).

Have you all ever been to a really good Italian restaurant where they serve you fresh bread with a dipping sauce??


{side note: I once went on a date where we had to wait so long for a table at one of those type of restaurants that by the time we got to the table I was a goner. I ate like 3 loaves and ate only 1 bite of my actual meal. Major fail, but had delicious leftovers–that I didn’t have to pay for–the next day! hah}


So my sister is known for making delicious herb bread in my family. It always turns out SO good when she makes it, and we all gobble it right up.

This weekend I decided to try my hand at it, but I did tweak it just a tad, of course. Nothing too crazy though 😉

Garlic Herb Bread


  • 2 Tb yeast
  • 2.5 cup warm water
  • 2 Tb sugar or honey
  • 3 Tb olive oil
  • 1.5 Tb salt
  • 1 Tb garlic powder
  • 2 Tb each of basil, rosemary, oregano, thyme
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 3 cups white flour


  • Put yeast, warm water, and sugar in a bowl
  • Let it sit 10 minutes until bubbly
  • Add olive oil, salt, garlic, and spices
  • Add flours, let it rise to double
  • Punch down, divide into 3 loaves and let rise to double again
  • Bake at 375 for 20-25 mins
  • Serve with balsamic vinegar and olive oil sprinkled with sea salt and fresh ground pepper (KEY!!)

It tasted awesome (especially with the dipping mixture of olive oil, balsamic, and pepper)!

My sister usually just makes it with all white flour, but I wanted to see if it would change the taste too much if I made it half and half. It definitely did not–still SO good. I actually like more substantial breads (i.e. whole wheat, whole grains) because I then only eat half a small loaf instead of a whole. Hah.

Plus, this bread is SO easy to make. See how the loaves are slightly lumpy?? That is how it should be:  just form a ball, drop on the cookie sheet and bake away. I heart easy recipes!

    • ahhh that is where it came from! You’re right then. Oh well-you still make it WAY more than I do. Haha. HAVE fun with the boys–I bet that’ll be tasty!

    Hmmm good stories from this weekend? I got hit by an Alzheimer’s pt and then she stomped on my foot and swore at me. Later, she pulled out her trach. Ilovemyjob.

      Oh wow-that is quite the story. I could NEVER be a nurse-I’d prob yell at them if they didn’t listen to me. Hah. You’re amazing!

  6. mmmmm I love all things bread! When I was losing weight I avoided it like the plague…NOT ANYMORE!!!

    I make our bread all the time…In fact we are actually in the market for a breadmaker…Just because I’ve never had one before 😉

    I prefer whole grain breads for sure…I love the heftiness they provide!

    I made 24 whole wheat cinnamon buns(with butternut squash and natural sugars) yesterday for Jeff’s work, individually wrapped them and they were gone in 2 hours. I was SHOCKED!
