How Much Is Too Much? + Thankful Thursday

Good morning friends! I trust you slept well? Where did that come from, I have no idea?? ….actually, I have been reading a lot of good books lately. I am a major book nerd. I LOVE reading. I often get lost in books and forget other things I am supposed to be doing…. my husband loves that part 😉 Maybe I am getting smarter lately from all the books– saying things like “I trust you slept well?” instead of “how’d you sleep?” Seriously check the goods out, those reads I’ve been spending any extra time with:

Exhibit A: The ScrewTape Letters by C. S. Lewis

Exhibit B: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Pie Peel Society

Great book–and a FUN read!

Exhibit C : Defined by Christ

incredible book

Exhibit D : The Secret Life of Bees (the only one on the list I am not finished with, yet. Check back later tonight 😉 )

SOO good so far

Have any of you book nerds like me read these books? They are all fantastic, uplifting, and pretty quick reads (minus the two more spiritual books- they make you think and examine your life a little more). I truly believe that a healthy life is one that is filled with daily exercise (albeit physical activity), optimal nutrition, spiritual/meditative time, family/friends, education (reading!!), and leisure/laughter. At least that is what makes ME healthy and happy!

On that note, when and HOW much is TOO much in regards to exercise?

The reason I ask this/pose the question to the blog world is because I once had an exercise addiction. Yes, I admit it. I was addicted to exercise. You know how I knew that I was (but didn’t admit it at the time)? I started feeling a slave to the gym. That is NOT healthy. When you feel you HAVE to go to the gym or else, that is not okay. I felt this way because I also struggled with severe disordered eating practices. I felt it was NOT okay to eat 3 meals per day if I did NOT attend to my daily gym time (of at LEAST 60 minutes 6 days/week). CRazy, I know. But that is how I felt and thought and lived. I was seriously dragging myself to the gym out of fear of gaining weight (when I was already severely underweight for my height) and not out of a desire to be fit or strong. I wanted to be super small. I wanted to be in total control of me. These are not healthy reasons (in my opinion) to spend hours at the gym. I was essentially hurting my body and my health :(

I think what is key about this question of “how much is too much exercise” is to exercise/be physically active out of a desire to be HEALTHY. Not to be a certain size, weight, or look just like a certain model or actress. It is all about YOU and your health. It is about being fit (if you want this), healthy, and happy.

mmmm weights!

The best way to do this (I think) is to find something YOU enjoy! Here are a few of my favs:

  • Zumba!!
  • BodyPUMP
  • stair workouts
  • running intervals
  • zoning out on the elliptical + sometimes doing elliptical intervals

It can happen that doing something you love ends up being too much. But when is it TOO much? Listen to your body– it will tell you when. Especially via injuries, fatigue, and loss of excitement in a certain fitness activity that used to be enjoyed. Plus, it always helps to switch up your routine, bust out of an exercise rut, try something new, or plain just take a rest day. I always have at LEAST one rest day per week, which helps my body relax, rejuvenate, and get psyched for another week. If I ever feel like I don’t want to go because it does not sound appealing AT all and will not be fun for me, I do not push myself in that way. It is healthier to listen up when your body talks. **NOTE: This is very different than YOU not wanting to exercise just because you plain don’t want to, though :)

hahaha SO true!

Here is a fabulous and very interesting article from the NYtimes on how too much exercise could be detrimental to the body. Read it, check it out, and let me know what you think. I would love to hear YOUR thoughts on this too.

I am glad I got a great a.m. workout in today, because I WANTED it :) Not because I felt I had to. Okay, off to eat some breakfast (it’ll most likely be some oatmeal…I am just sayin’!) Oh and before I forget, what I am thankful for this beautiful Thursday morning:

ThankFul Thursday:

  • my warm bed
  • good friends who truly listen
  • my job as a fitness instructor
  • a husband who holds me when I cry :)

What are YOU thankful for? And what are YOUR thoughts on when is TOO much exercise?

I agree Annette! Not working out and eating healthy for the wrong reasons never last long. If you commit to it, it must be for the right reasons, and must be a lifestyle change- not just a fear of 5-10 pounds. Lifestyle! Healthy Lifestyle!

  2. I am thankful for being able to see my family this weekend and being able spend a few days with them. I think too much exercise is not based on much time you spend at the gym rather I how it mentally effects you when you do or do not go.

  3. I LOVE to read, and The Secret Life of Bees is one of my favorites! I’m excited to hear how you like it, because it changes my life:)
